Melanie Tamaki is an outsider. The only child of a loving but neglectful mother is just barely coping with school and with life. But everything changes on the day she returns home to find her mother is missing, lured back to Half World by the vindictive Mr. Glueskin. Soon Melanie begins an epic and darkly fantastical journey to save her parents. What she does not yet realize is that the future of the universe depends upon her success.

L'épouvantable peur d'Épiphanie Frayeur is one of my favourite kids graphic novels, about a girl over coming her fear of everything. Giant days is the only other one here that I've read already. Half World, Library at Mount Char and The Witches I've mostly heard great things about. 📚📚📚

Don‘t remember what @bookriot article I found this book one but I am so glad I requested it. This is a beautiful fantasy novel with a strong and complex heroine. Join Melanie as she travels to Half World in an effort to rescue her mother. I won‘t tell you more than that because I‘ll spoil it. It‘s a great read and once you start, you won‘t be able to put it down!!

Lindy I love this and everything else by Goto. ❤️ 6y
Bookishaf @Lindy I‘m definitely looking forward to reading more by her!! 6y

Another combination of #PrideMonth & #Riotgrams! These are all books by queer and trans authors #SetNearWhereYouLive (in Vancouver). Other than that they don't really have much in common! From top left: Japanese Canadian portal fantasy, realist tale about elderly lesbians in 80s Vancouver, exploration of relationships & polyamory in modern day Van, contemporary lesbian pulp set in East Van, and feminist sex work positive dark fantasy. #QueerBooks

ReadingEnvy These sound great! 7y
CaseyTheCanadianLesbrarian @ReadingEnvy Yeah, they are all great books on very different ways! 7y

A very creepy but very interesting world. I enjoyed this story and while I am super happy it didn't have too many illustrations, I did really like the world building. It is a young book, and while I don't want to read it again, I can suggest it to kids.

TricksyTails I love the artwork in the background! 6y
iread2much @TricksyTails thank you! We just got that when we where in Kyoto. It was our first time there and it was a wonder reminder of our trip 😊 6y
TricksyTails 😍 What a wonderful souvenir! I hope to go one day! It's been my dream. 6y

iread2much @TricksyTails thank you! I‘ve only been twice, but we are planning on going again in 2018 for the year of the dog. We want ALL the Akita stuff. We usually visit my family there, but if we go this year we will probably just visit and not stay since we will be on more of a time crunch. I hope you get to go, it‘s a wonderful country 6y
TricksyTails Ooh all the Akita stuff! Not to mention, the food! I'll be anticipating pictures when you go in 2018!! Do you just go to Kyoto or do you travel throughout Japan? 6y
iread2much @TricksyTails mostly we go to Tokyo, since it‘s easy to see my family from there, but last time we went to Kyoto and Osaka, and next time I think we are going to go north. I love the food, esp the Udon. I make a lot of traditional foods at home, but I can‘t make my own noodles, so good udon is one of my favorite things to eat when I‘m there 🤩 6y
TricksyTails Oh my...homemade udon is the best. I wish I knew how to make noodles. I'd love to learn to make udon and ramen noodles. You're making me hungry! What's your favorite comfort food to make? You're so fortunate to get to go to Japan so often. Dream come true! 6y
iread2much @TricksyTails hmm, difficult question! Probably curry, I love Japanese style curry, but if I am ambitious, then katsu donburi. My sauce is excellent, if I do say so myself. ☺️ I wish we could go to Japan more, I‘ve been really lucky this year. My brother showed us how to use the credit cards right and my husband has been really good about getting us enough points, otherwise we could never afford it! 6y
TricksyTails Mmm two of my favorites! Curry and donburi. I love oyako donburi. You'll have to post a photo of your excellent sauce the next time you make it! 6y

An amazing read! A unique world, with a protagonist that's just so vulnerable and human. The prose is lovely enough to carry through grotesque and horror to heroism and love without missing a beat.

I read this book imagining the story of Melanie Tamaki's grotesque field trip into the broken limbo that is Half World as animated by Studio Ghibli. I know I'm not alone. A visually compelling story in many ways (Jillian Tamaki woot). A reluctant hero. Disturbing imagery. Animal companions! - @szainabwilliams

gaming4justice This looks very interesting... I have to look more into it! 8y

I love everything Hiromi Goto has written, but this duo has a special place in the bookshelf of my heart. Intriguing stories, strong portraits and uncomfortable questions about the good and evil in all of us. And amazing drawings by Jillian Tamaki!
