Asking your local library for diverse books WORKS! I live in a small predominantly white town in the north east of the United States. And my library just bought AMINA'S VOICE by Hena Khan. Request more diverse books, ask librarians to order diverse books, get those circulation numbers up!!

Fantastic YA fantasy. Low fantasy in this case using the real world with magical aspects to the world. A brilliant weaving of art, identity, and magic. Looking forward to more Shadowshaper books (hopefully!). A full review to come (soon) on my blog!

I have said this often: there is only so much oppression groups of people can take. If they are pushed and pushed, there are only so many options left.

By no means am I condoning violence (in fact I despise violence) but when non-violent protests & dialogues lead nowhere or are manipulated by the people in power or violence is done to the marginalized, this is where we can end up.

Solid first book of a fantasy series set in the Mangoverse! Queen Shulamit and Rivka together go in an adventure to find love for Shulamit. Little do they know, their quest is much more dangerous than they think! Great diverse cast of characters, looking at different issues that pop up in traditional fantasy narratives. #DiverseBookBloggers #DiverseBooks #LGBTQHistoryMonth

Neat and unique idea and plot. The execution was not there for me. Plus, I really did not appreciate the representation Meng Po... the only character to speak in broken English. Somehow every other God & Deity across cultures and countries speak perfect English but not Meng Po... ugh.

I really enjoyed this book! We need more Latina LGBTQ+ protagonists. I am excited for the rest of the series. I think the author was able to create something special from an #ownvoices perspective. We definitely need diverse books, giving our young readers positive narratives about characters with different identities and celebrating different cultures. Labyrinth Lost gets a huge recommendation from me.

A fun and fast read! This hits the spot of space horror -> a mix between The Ring and Dead Space (the game). There were some problematic things for me, such as I do not understand the obsession of evil Japanese women/girls. I understand in The Ring as that was a Japanese story originally. But it's a western obsession too. So yeah, there were some problematic descriptors. But those were minor IMO and I still enjoyed the read!

read_diverse_books I don't think I've ever read space horror! How cool! I loved Dead Space 1 and 2. 😁 8y
gaming4justice @read_diverse_books I loved Dead Space games too! I think the genre needs diverse space horror though. There were characters of color but I did. It think the author portrayed them that well. 8y

read_diverse_books I didn't know people read in the gym! You mean actually reading text? I could manage an audiobook, but not reading text. Lol. good on you for being a multi tasker! 8y
gaming4justice @read_diverse_books I read when I cardio usually. I used to listen to music but I found I can knock out 4-5 chapters at the gym! More time for reading :) 8y
WOCreads Sounds fantastic, enjoy!👌 Ha no idea how you manage to read at the Gym, I get motion sickness from reading on the treadmill 🙈 8y
gaming4justice @Ifyoucanreadthis_Bina it has definitely been something I have trained myself to do. While I do not get motion sickness, the first couple times very challenging to concentrate. I don't treadmill very often and stick to bikes & ellipticals. 8y
WOCreads That's a pretty cool skill tho!😃 I could go for an audiobook but most gyms here have the music turned up too high. 8y

This is the first in a space opera trilogy. Unfortunately, it didn't do it for me. Between the generic science fiction "big bad" storyline, the casual sexism, the too detailed descriptive writing, the over use of made up words, and the myriad of sex scenes... nothing was really working for me. Even the battles were unfortunately boring... Recommendation: a hard pass ?

Another fantastic graphic novel by Marjane Satrapi! Chicken with Plums is short but complex, exploring concepts of love, death, passions, and family. In the same art style of Persepolis, Chicken with Plums starts out with Nasser trying to find a new tar - but his woes are deeper than just a feeling of loss for his instrument. #DiverseBooks #DiverseBookBloggers

A great read about how API folks got into the discussion about race. The book is very academic but worthwhile and educational. I would recommend this book if you want to learn more about the API identity; however, I think Wu focuses a lot on eastern Asian issues since that is his perspective. Wu's writing is logical and clear, providing context and clarity in the concepts he is introducing. #DiverseBooks #DiverseBookBloggers

A wonderful mystery novel, starring Easy Rawlings - just a guy trying to live and make ends meet. He gets wrapped up in a mystery trying to find a young woman, Daphne Monet. I loved this formative story of Easy's detective identity. Mosley also writes a lot about race, SES, & power, particularly the relationship between Easy and the police. A high recommendation from me! Very rarely do I get blown away by a book. There are books I really enjoy for many different reasons. However, only once in a while do I deem a book one of my favorites of all time. Signs Preceding the End of the World by Yuri Herrera and translated by Lisa Dillman is one of those books. The entire experience was a ‘one in one hundred books‘ type of experience. I was enamored by the story and the prose. See full review: http://bit.ly/2dkDanB
