7 posts | 5 read | 1 reading | 4 to read
Opening up a world of magic and adventure, Our Lady of Mysterious Ailments by T. L. Huchu is the second book in the beloved Edinburgh Nights series. Ropa Moyos ghostalking practice has tanked, desperate for money to pay bills and look after her family she reluctantly accepts a job to look into the history of a coma patient receiving treatment at the magical private hospital Our Lady of Mysterious Ailments. The patient is a teenage schoolboy called Max Wu, and healers at the hospital are baffled by the illness which has confounded medicine and magic. Ropas investigation leads her to the Edinburgh Ordinary School for Boys, one of only the four registered schools for magic in the whole of Scotland (the oldest and only one that remains closed to female students). But the headmaster there is hiding something and as more students succumb Ropa learns that a long-dormant and malevolent entity has once again taken hold in this world. She sets off to track the current host for this spirit and try to stop it before other lives are endangered.

The second book in the Edinburgh nights series, not as good as the first but still lots of fun. I love the adventures around Edinburgh, the humour and the underground library. The mc is funny and feisty and the books are quick and easy to read if you want something light with mystery and paranormal elements
I‘ll definitely read the next one in the series

Started listening to book 2 in the series set in a post apocalyptic Edinburgh- where magic and ghosts abound. Ropa is investigating why a young hospital patient is dangerously ill using her supernatural skills. A great voice actor really adds to the experience. 💚🐉

4 ⭐ Ropa‘s business lost all credibility when she took time out to figure out what was happening to the kids that disappeared. She solved her case but wrecked her reputation. Now she must find some way to supplement her income to make sure her sister and grams have food and a warm place to stay. She has a great opportunity to apprentice for a with a renowned magic user who is a bit eccentric. ⬇

LibrarianRyan But never having been to a magic school gets in her way when she fails the magic test. So, no apprentice ship for her. However, the magic man sees potential and decides he wants to work with Ropa. But it will have to be as an intern. That means no money. Ugggghhhhh. However, Ropa can not pass up the opportunity no matter how much she may want to.

LibrarianRyan To help earn a little green she takes on a case at the Our Lady of Mysterious Aliments magical hospital. Something has happened to a boy named Max Wu that is beyond all their knowledge of medicine and magic. 2y
LibrarianRyan While the main story is finding a cure for Max, this story has multiple story lines going just like the original books in the series. As readers we get to learn about the Bank of Scotland and how it came to be, how it exists in this alternative society, and how magic is tied up with all of it. We also meat a nice Canadian who just wants his family money out of the bank. 2y
LibrarianRyan Plus, we finally lean more about the library of the dead. There is actually more about the Library of the Dead in this book then there ever was in book one. And it is really interesting. Really.

I liked this book just like I did the first one. I find even though it is not the best book I have ever read; I cannot stop thinking or talking about it. I like how it mimics life where everything is happening at once.

LibrarianRyan Not use one story line from beginning to end. The author does a great job of weaving and completing most of these story lines but leaving just enough to make you excited for the sequel. And that I am. I need book 3 now. But odds are I may have to reread books 1 and 2 before I start that a year from now. 2y

This fun follow-up to THE LIBRARY OF THE DEAD picks up not long after the close of the first book. Ropa takes on her new responsibilities but still feels pressured to get in some extra money to support her family. A strange illness where Priya works has them both dive back into danger for answers! I listened this time and Ropa‘s voice really shines in this format as well! The plot‘s self-contained but I hope the third book has more answers…

The hedge creatures are gaining.

Out of the way, Priya yells. She quickly incants a spell I don't catch, which sends a blast of air to the door. But the wood flexes inwards, absorbing it all, and springs back in place, launching her spell right at us. I'm hit by a wind so powerful it throws me onto the ground....I think I landed on my tailbone, 'cause my butt hurts.

This is why I never liked school.

...there used to be a time when Edinburgh had some kind of festival and people would stream in from all over the world. This was before the catastrophe, mind you. Even heard them claim the city's population would double or something, which sounds like bollocks if you ask me. Like, where would you put all them extra people? The King's Market Week is hectic enough, thank you very much.

I've got my left earphone plugged in, listening to an audio book of The Peloponnesian War.... I dig listening to stuff like this when I'm about.... If there's anything I can put my ear to the keyhole and eavesdrop on, I'm game. It's the only method I know of teleportation and time travel too. Do enough reading and you come to realize this world's been insane right from the beginning.
