Does My Body Offend You?
Does My Body Offend You? | Marie Marquardt, Mayra Cuevas

A timely story of two teenagers who discover the power of friendship, feminism, and standing up for what you believe in, no matter where you come from. A collaboration between two gifted authors writing from alternating perspectives, this compelling novel shines with authenticity, courage, and humor. Malena Rosario is starting to believe that catastrophes come in threes. First, Hurricane Mara destroyed her home, taking her unbreakable spirit with it. Second, she and her mother are now stuck in Florida, which is nothing like her beloved Puerto Rico. And third, when she goes to school bra-less after a bad sunburn and is humiliated by the school administration into covering up, she feels like she has no choice but to comply. Ruby McAllister has a reputation as her school's outspoken feminist rebel. But back in Seattle, she lived under her sisters shadow. Now her sister is teaching in underprivileged communities, and shes in a Florida high school, unsure of what to do with her future, or if shes even capable making a difference in the world. So when Ruby notices the new girl is being forced to cover up her chest, she is not willing to keep quiet about it. Neither Malena nor Ruby expected to be the leaders of the school's dress code rebellion. But the girls will have to face their own insecurities, biases, and privileges, and the ups and downs in their newfound friendship, if they want to stand up for their ideals andultimatelyfor themselves.

I loved the subject of this book, esp with its relevance for my daughter (there are a lot of dress code battles where we live), and the focus on intersectionality was fantastic. I just didn‘t like the writing in Ruby‘s chapter at all. Not sure if the dual author thing worked well in this one. I would have preferred the whole book from Malena‘s POV.

I was slightly disappointed in this one but, then again,I went in with high expectations. I would hoping this would be like Moxie, but instead it just fell short. Out of the 408 pages of the book, there were probably 150 where nothing happened with the dress code or school regulations in general. I felt that though we were supposed to feel that Dr. Hardaway redeemed herself at the end but I still don‘t really like her. The end of the book felt ⬇️

Zoe-h ⬆️ unfinished in every way. Then one of the MCs burned her bra. There‘s nothing wrong with not wearing one but that‘s basically the equivalent of burning $30-50. Just donate it instead of burning it while underage drinking. 3.75⭐️ 4mo

Pickpick

This is the story of 2 teens who discover the power of friendship, feminism, & standing up for what you believe in, in the midst of a dress code rebellion.
At first I thought this was going to be a full on rebellious read about archaic, sexist, conformist rules pitting teens against adults. But I was delighted (and enlightened!) to read that it was a thoughtful story of different perspectives.
