This a great nonfiction narrative, African American history book that demands to be read, that we should all know about. The story of a slave couple that escape from the south to north in plain sight, out in the open! I highly recommend it!

The story of Isobel, a Scottish stitcher that immigrates to the United States. She has synesthesia which is a blending of the senses - hearing music and seeing colors in your mind is an example of synesthesia.

She has an affair with Nathaniel Hawthorne and from that inspires the character of Hester Pryne from The Scarlet Letter A.

All I gotta say is, UGH!!! MEN!!!

I loved the MexAme history. You might have heard of the “bracero” program, but have you heard of the traqueros? Mexican workers that built the railroads in the US. Eventually, MexAm family settlements formed throughout the Midwest because of the railroad.
This goes into how these families held on to their culture & heritage. This is little known MexAm!history that BUILT THIS PROSPEROUS COUNTRY!

The title alone caught my eye but the story captured my heart. #readwithPRIDE🌈
Because coming out is a personal experience & sometimes happens over & over again & sometimes can be difficult & uncomfortable & heartbreaking & yet sometimes it can be easy & welcoming & just as normal as you introducing your hetero love to your parents. I wish the later was the norm for all. That‘s why this book is needed. Live your life out loud, Yami! 🌈🙌🏻

A psychologically haunting, spooky, creepy read. It‘s being compared to or likened to MEXICAN GOTHIC but I have to admit I loved this one more. I hated being scared but I was definitely entertained. If you like haunting, spooky reads this one is definitely for you! I really like the juxtaposition of religion and curanderismo, something we talk about in MAS class and we, Mexicans and Mexican Americans, live daily. I find that duality fascinating.

This is the story of 2 teens who discover the power of friendship, feminism, & standing up for what you believe in, in the midst of a dress code rebellion.
At first I thought this was going to be a full on rebellious read about archaic, sexist, conformist rules pitting teens against adults. But I was delighted (and enlightened!) to read that it was a thoughtful story of different perspectives.

What an epic voyage of a read! A literary fiction adventure read filled w/adventure, mystery, friendship, love, & forgiveness!
It‘s the 1930 and 4 children run away from the Lincoln School for Native American children. I was rooting for them to just make it to their destination & finally find the peace & love & HOME they are searching for.

Welp, if you ever go missing don‘t call me for help or expect me to figure out the mystery because I‘ll lock up the wrong person certain they‘re the right person and you‘ll still be missing. I am definitely not a detective, mystery solver, BUT I do looooove a good mystery and this was a twisty, twisted good tale! AND it‘ll be a HBO film soon. So you know the drill, READ IT before you SEE IT! 📖🔜🎬🎞🍿

A slow burn thriller with diverse characters about a black father and a white father whose sons where married and murdered in cold blood. When the case goes cold the fathers take it upon their hands to find out who the killer is.

A wonderful anthology that gives just a small glimpse of a variety of views about what it means to be Mexican American. Short stories, memoirs, poems, and comics that explore the rich and diverse Mexican American identity. My favorite story was “Yoli Calderon and Principal Hayes by Angela Cervantes. At first, I felt horrible for cackling out loud at this lady‘s terrible family and way of upbringing but the way she puts it you can‘t help but laugh.
She was raised by her grandparents that were really done with raising kids. Her grandmother was an eye-rolling, foul-mouthed, loving yet uncompromising kind of person that reminded me of being raised and loved my Archie Bunker. 🥴

I know this is a work of fiction but I also know there are many stories like this and other stories yet to be told that are very much real and sadly nothing fictional about them. And still so many other stories that will never be told because they‘re lost in death somewhere in the middle of the desert. I hear you, Pulga. I hear your scream & that of all those just wanting a chance at the best and beautiful life that we all want.

Another side of the WWII story I love to read so much. A story of friendship tested and torn apart due to blind allegiance. This read really takes you into the Nazi party brainwashing of the youth using fear mongering and the degrading of an entire group. But it also tells the story that not everything is so black and white. There are so many colors to the same story and the same character and hate is a powerful contaminant to all sides.

This was an extremely difficult read but an important one we should all read. Crimes and atrocities against women happen every day in many countries and the crimes and unspeakable acts forced upon the Yazidi women and girls are unimaginable and not widely known. Until now. Until Nadia Murad persevered and managed to survive her horror. She is an amazing woman and I am in awe of her strength.

After reading his memoir it‘s so clear that he is the only one that could take the reins. His entire life, from birth to culture & heritage, has been about politics w/humor, unabashed logic, & matter-of-fact WTFness. It‘s definitely one of my #favoriteread2018 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

This is a story of two ordinary people living in an extraordinary time filled with pain and devastation, deprived not only of their freedom but their dignity, their names, and their identities.
