Learning to Talk: Stories
Learning to Talk: Stories | Hilary Mantel
8 posts | 3 read | 1 reading | 9 to read
Learning to Talk is a dazzling collection of short stories from the two-time winner of the Booker Prize and #1 New York Times bestselling author of the Wolf Hall trilogy. With a New Preface In the wake of Hilary Mantel's brilliant conclusion to her award-winning Wolf Hall trilogy, this collection of loosely autobiographical stories locates the transforming moments of a haunted childhood. Absorbing and evocative, these drawn-from-life stories begin in the 1950s in an insular northern village "scoured by bitter winds and rough gossip tongues." For the young narrator, the only way to survive is to get up, get on, get out. In "King Billy Is a Gentleman," the child must come to terms with the loss of a father and the puzzle of a fading Irish heritage. "Curved Is the Line of Beauty is a story of friendship, faith and a near-disaster in a scrap-yard. The title story sees our narrator ironing out her northern vowels with the help of an ex-actress with one lung and a Manchester accent. In "Third Floor Rising, she watches, amazed, as her mother carves out a stylish new identity. With a deceptively light touch, Mantel illuminates the poignant experiences of childhood that leave each of us forever changed. "A book of her short stories is like a little sweet treat...Mantel's narrators never tell everything they know, and that's why they're worth listening to, carefully." --USA Today "Her short stories always recognize other potential realities...Even the most straightforward of Mantel's tales retain a faintly otherworldly air." --The Washington Post

Started this on my lunch break today and have fallen head over heels in love with Mantel's writing once more. ❤️ She truly was one of the greatest writers of our time! I loved her Cromwell trilogy, and this is my first time reading her shorter fiction! 💕📚 I think I may have to pick up A Place of Greater Safety soon, which is her novel about the French Revolution! Anyone else read this book and love it as much as I do?

Ruthiella I‘ve not read that one but I love Mantel‘s writing too. She was a genius, IMO. I want to read everything she wrote. 1y
jlhammar Great collection! Glad you‘re enjoying it. 1y

Fiction, but largely autobiographical. Mantel was such an interesting woman and just an amazing writer. These stories are excellent. If you‘ve not read her yet, Wolf Hall is probably the best place to start (loved that trilogy), but I also enjoyed her memoir Giving Up the Ghost. Glad I still have a few of her books left to read.

JamieArc Ooh. Stacking this for the #Booked2023 prompt Book of short stories. 1y
kspenmoll I am on her second story & loving it. 1y

Hilary Mantel‘s grandfather was from the drowned village of Derwent. She mentions this in the preface of this collection and it plays a part in her story “The Clean Slate.” I‘d never heard of this so had to do a bit of research. Fascinating! Love when books do that. I guess that the remnants of the village emerged during the dry summer of 2018 (article link in comments below).

squirrelbrain I find stories like this fascinating. There is a similar village only a couple of miles from where I live, that was revealed this summer when water levels fell. https://www.yorkshirepost.co.uk/news/weather/yorkshire-heatwave-low-water-levels... 1y
jlhammar @squirrelbrain Wow, so interesting. Thanks for sharing! 1y

I‘ve never read Mantel before, so when news of her death arrived, I snapped this up to remedy my failing. I didn‘t give these stories the attention they deserved, as I was distracted while listening, but those I focused on were quite good. I look forward to eventually getting to Wolf Hall (which has been on my Nook for a while).

Morning coffee with Mantel. Awoke to the sad news of her passing. Such a brilliant writer. Look forward to reading these stories drawn from Mantel‘s childhood in the north of England.

Ruthiella That is unfortunate. She was an amazing writer. 2y

jlhammar @Prairiegirl_reading You are in for such a treat. Her Thomas Cromwell trilogy (Wolf Hall, Bring up the Bodies & The Mirror and the Light) is amazing! 2y
Prairiegirl_reading @jlhammar I always put off chunksters but I‘ve already hit my goal for the year so maybe it‘s time! That and the winners for October and that will probably all I can do. 🤔😄 2y
