Mehso-so

I enjoy Santiago's writing, but I was torn about the story, which summarizes my whole experience w/this book. Ana is flawed, but her manipulative & selfish nature contrasts w/her awareness of the horrible truth of slavery & using people (though of course that changes nothing). Other characters' perspectives enriched my understanding of the history, but not always the story itself. At the end, I felt both relief & like something was missing.

First time using #Libby . Not sure how I feel about this one.

LibrarianRyan About the book or the platform? 6y
Bookzombie I think the platform takes a bit to adjust to, but I like it now. My only complaint is that it doesn‘t also show my books that are on my wishlist in Overdrive. It only shows holds and current checkouts. 6y
WanderingBookaneer @LibrarianRyan @Bookzombie : I was referring to the book. 6y
nomadreader As a warning, I stopped listening to audio books in Libby because it didn't always remember my place unless I bookmarked each time I stopped. Maybe they've fixed that by now, it it was really annoying, so I'm back in the Overdrive app. 6y

Pickpick

Between a pick and a so-so. I enjoyed the cultural setting the most. Sort of in the style of Gabriel Garcia Marquez, minus the magical realism.

I thought it was just okay. I wish Santiago just focused on Ana, not on everyone in her life. The little side stories did not add much to the novel at all. That being said, I did not like Santiago's narration in the beginning, but it grew on me. Even though I thought this novel was okay, I'll still read more of Santiago's books. I just expected so much more, so I'm a bit disappointed with it.
