The Secret of Crickley Hall
The Secret of Crickley Hall | James Herbert
Would you stay in a haunted house for more than one night? Would you live in a place where ghostly things keep happening? Where a cellar door you know you locked the night before is always open the following morning? Where hushed whimpering is heard? Where white shadows steal through the darkness? Where the presence of evil is all around you? Would you? Should you? The Caleighs did, but they had their reasons. They should have known better though. As the terror mounts, they begin to regret their decision. As the horror rises, they realize their very lives are at risk....and so is their sanity. For the secret of Crickley Hall is beyond all nightmares.

One of my favourite prompts from #pop22 is "a book about a secret". This one has it in the title, but it's worth asking...

Can anyone think of a book with a really juicy secret at its core?? (No spoilers, obviously ?)

RaeLovesToRead @vivastory Hmm... Mum read this but passed it on because she didn't think I'd like it... then I realised it was on the 1001 books to read before you die list... Will definitely consider it 😊 2y
vivastory I really liked it, although not as much as the other Carey that I've read 2y
RaeLovesToRead @vivastory Looks like that won the Booker too! 2y

Red velvet cake and a tale of a haunted house in the English countryside. Perfection!

Clare-Dragonfly The woman on the cover looks like a BBC presenter about to give a historical tour—not a woman terrified of the house she‘s moving into! 3y

Brain still mush. Going for an easy read.... I've found Herbert very hit or miss in the past but this seems enjoyable and familiar, though I haven't read it or watched the TV adaptation.

Bookzombie I think I have had this series marked to watch on Hulu for ages, but I had no clue it was based on James Herbert book. 4y

I read this a few years ago. It‘s rare that I keep single books (where I don‘t collect the author) I less they are dystopia which is my favourite genre. I did with this book as I enjoyed it so much. Will one day I may re-read but so many books, so little time...
