An action-packed return to the world of the New York Times bestselling Jackaby series--brimming with supernatural mayhem. Abigail Rook never intended to become the Seer, but now the magical ability to look past the material plane and reveal the truth of all things is hers alone. With this overwhelming new gift, she is uniquely situated to answer the most burning questions facing New Fiddleham and its citizens--both human and supernatural. The only problem? She has no idea what she's doing. And New Fiddleham isn't waiting for Abigail to be ready. Local witches and other magical beings are going missing. Abigail isn't sure how to even begin looking for them, let alone uncover what's behind the disappearances. Meanwhile, tensions between human and supernatural residents of New Fiddleham are curdling into a hatred that could tear the city apart. To make matters worse, Abigail's parents appear, ready to take her back to England and marry her off. Abigail has no choice but to follow her Sight, her instincts, and any clues she can find to track a culprit who is somehow always three steps ahead of her... William Ritter returns to the world of the New York Times bestselling Jackaby series in this laugh-out-loud action-adventure perfect for new readers and fans of the original series.

I‘d like to preface this review with the confession that I‘ve never read a book in Ritter‘s Jackaby supernatural fantasy universe. And while this is billed as a book that can be read as a standalone, I did have some instances of feeling lost due to some references from the characters‘ past/world-building. Miss Rook, as Jackaby‘s reluctant successor in her ability to “read” auras and assist the police in gaining clues of nefarious activities, ⬇️

robinb comes into her own as she strives to locate a young girl‘s missing mother only to discover that there are darker forces at work than just a kidnapper. Rook and Jackaby are fun to watch together…humorous, endearing and entertaining. And while the story began a little slowly for me (maybe due to my lack of Jackaby knowledge), it caught up and was an enjoyable romp for me.
My only issues were two-fold: ⬇️

robinb I didn‘t feel as connected to the characters as I would have liked; and it felt more like a teen/young adult cozy mystery, albeit with a little more depth/lack of restraint to it…and unfortunately, I‘m not a big fan of cozies…but that‘s on me. Still, this was a well-written book with a good plotline (which included some implications relative to modern-day issues along the way). All-in-all, it was a good read for me. 4/5⭐️ #coverlove (edited) 8mo
Annmcoop I might‘ve picked this up based on the cover alone. ❤️ 8mo
