The Vicious Circle
The Vicious Circle: A Novel | Katherine St. John
For fans of Lucy Foley and Liane Moriarty, a twisty, escapist suspense about a mysterious retreat center harboring violent secrets. A perfect paradise? Or a perfect nightmare? On a river deep in the Mexican jungle stands the colossal villa Xanadu, a wellness center thats home an ardent spiritual group devoted to self-help guru Paul Bentzen and his enigmatic wife Kali. But when Paul mysteriously dies, his entire estateincluding Xanaduis left not to Kali, but to his estranged niece Sveta. Shocked and confused, Sveta travels from New York City to Mexico to pay her respects. At first, Xanadu seems like a secluded paradise with its tumbling gardens, beautiful people, and transcendent vibe. But soon the mystical faade wears thin, revealing a group of brainwashed members drunk on promises of an impossible utopia, guided by a disturbing belief system and a charismatic, dangerously capable leader. As the sinister forces surrounding Sveta become apparent, she realizes, too late, she cant escape. Frantic and terrified, she discovers her only chance of survival is to put her confidence in the very person she trusts the least.

3¾⭐

This was one weird-a$$ cult book. It was definitely different but maybe it was a little too different to be believed…I‘m not sure, but either way, it was entertaining enough. I thought Christine Lakin gave an adequate performance with the narration.

5feet.of.fury I audiobooked this one too and I agree. It was fun brain candy 🍬 for sure 12mo

An action packed read. Sveta inherits a fortune -& a cult- from her “spiritual leader” uncle, but her uncle‘s wife contests it. Torn between staying and dismantling the organization & taking a cut of the money & heading back to NYC, she soon realizes that the cult is more dangerous than she thought.
Easy one to fly through, fast paced & entertaining.

I love St. John‘s books! Always an escape to an exotic locale and the suspense pumping. There were twists in this one I didn‘t see coming. Former model Sveta arrives in Mexico after finding out she is inheriting her estranged uncle‘s estate which is an empire based on a cult (not a spoiler). Stuck there Sveta does her best to survive when bigger threats appear. There is contesting to the will. A very fun and enjoyable read! I recommend!

I really enjoyed this book. Sveta, a Russian American ex-model, received a surprising phone call from the man, Lucas, who ghosted her after taking her virginity. Lucas, now a lawyer, was entrusted to fulfill Sveta's uncle's last wishes. Sveta is the only one who can set things right at Xanadu but is her life worth the battle? I'm a sucker from suspenseful novel with a touch of romance! Solid ⭐⭐⭐⭐
