Dream Builders | Oindrila Mukherjee
3 posts | 1 read | 2 to read
After living in the US for years, Maneka Roy returns home to India to mourn the loss of her mother and finds herself in a new world. The booming city of Hrishipur where her father now lives is nothing like the part of the country where she grew up, and the more she sees of this new, sparkling city, the more she learns that nothing--and no one--here is as it appears. Ultimately, it will take an unexpected tragic event for Maneka and those around her to finally understand just how fragile life is in this city built on aspirations. Written from the perspectives of ten different characters, Oindrila Mukherjee's incisive debut novel explores class divisions, gender roles, and stories of survival within a society that is constantly changing and becoming increasingly Americanized. It's a story about India today, and people impacted by globalization everywhere: a tale of ambition, longing, and bitter loss that asks what it really costs to try and build a dream.

I was definitely more feeling #aardvark‘s picks this month. There was another one I wanted as well: The Sweet Spot, but I decided to go with a past pick instead to round out my box. They are really bringing the 🔥🔥!

Maame was on my #ReadersRadar, so I decided to go ahead and pick it up from #botm. I was tempted by the new Brett Easton Ellis, but I‘m not sure I‘m up for 680 pages. 🤔

vlwelser I just started The New Life tonight. 🖤 1y
Hooked_on_books I considered the House of Eve, but the first descriptor of it was romance and I don‘t do well with those. I‘m planning to wait on reviews to see if I want to read that one or not. 1y
Megabooks @vlwelser reading twin this year! 💜 1y

Megabooks @Hooked_on_books yeah, I was concerned about that too (because I‘m not a fan either) but I read several reviews on the storygraph, and it didn‘t seem to really be a romance. 🤞🏻 I can trust TS!! 1y
Hooked_on_books @Megabooks Oh that‘s a good sign! I‘ll be watching for your review. 1y
ErikasMindfulShelf Maame is excellent! 1y
sarahbarnes Maame definitely sounds interesting! Have you read other books by Ellis? I‘m listening to the Once upon a time at Bennington College podcast right now (recommended by @merelybookish) and he‘s featured in it. I‘ve never read anything by him. 1y
Megabooks @ErikasMindfulShelf I‘ve read good things! 1y
Megabooks @sarahbarnes I read less than zero years ago, but I haven‘t read anything in awhile. He was an ex‘s favorite author but I never moved past that one. 🤷🏻‍♀️ 1y

Just going for one book at #aardvark this month, but it sounds good! I‘m interested in another of the picks but already have the audio on hold at the library.

Megabooks I picked the same one. It sounds really good. 1y
vlwelser I'm between this one you picked and this 1y
vlwelser What one do you already have on library hold? 1y
Hooked_on_books @vlwelser Liar, Dreamer, Thief! 😆 1y
vlwelser Another month where we're all picking the same books. I'm holding off until tomorrow before making my final choice. I do love that even with 5 we're having to think about it. 1y
