This is the amazing story of Black men & women in WWII America. They had to fight to participate in military roles beyond cook or other laborer. Factories at home didn‘t want them either. The organizations fighting for WWII participation funneled straight into ones that ended Jim Crow. The utter mindf*** it must‘ve been to fight eugenics abroad only to return to an unchanged country. Delmont balances highlighting individuals and larger movements.
SamAnne I really want to read this. My ex-husband wrote the autobiography of Vernon Baker, one of the WWII vets awarded a Medal of Honor decades later. He was the only one to survive in his platoon on the Italian front when they were used as cannon fodder. Treated as a national hero in Italy, spent 3 years after the war in Italy with the love of his life. Eventually he had to return to the U.S and he knew he could not bring a white wife back with him. Megabooks @SamAnne you‘d definitely find this interesting. It‘s horrible how poorly treated the Black WWII vets were treated back home. That sounds like a fascinating book your ex wrote. 2y
