Down and Out in Paradise
Down and Out in Paradise: The Life of Anthony Bourdain | Charles Leerhsen
5 posts | 4 read | 2 to read
A groundbreaking, candid, well-sourcedbut definitely unauthorizedbiography of the celebrity chef and TV star Anthony Bourdain, based on extensive interviews with those who knew him intimately. Anthony Bourdains death by suicide in June, 2018 shocked people around the world. Bourdain seemed to have it all: an irresistible personality, a dream job, a beautiful family, and international fame. The reality, though, was more complicated than it seemed. Bourdain became a celebrity with his bestselling book Kitchen Confidential. He parlayed it into a series of hit television shows, including the Food Channels Anthony Bourdain: No Reservations and CNNs Parts Unknown. But his charisma belied a troubled spirit. Addiction and an obsession with perfection and personal integrity ruined two marriages and turned him into a boss from hell, even as millions became intrigued by the ever-curious and genuinely empathetic traveler they saw on TV. Bourdain was already running out of steam, physically and emotionally, when he fell hard for an Italian actress who could be even colder to him than he sometimes was to others, and who effectively drove a wedge between him and his young daughter. Down and Out in Paradise is the first book to tell the true and full Bourdain story, relating the highs and lows of an extraordinary life. Leerhsen shows how Bourdains never-before-reported childhood traumas fueled both his creativity and the insecurities that would lead him to a place of despair.

⭐️⭐️ What would provoke an author to biographize a person he so clearly disdains? Nothing new or provocative here, but plenty regurgitation of other, better books. I should‘ve listened to Patrick Radden Keefe, when asked at the Southern Festival of Books if this was worth reading, and he uttered a vehement “No.” A hard pass for true Bourdain fans. I got my credit back.

PS. Fuck this guy for mocking the Orwell title Bourdain loved so much.

Megabooks F this book!! 🖕🏻🖕🏻 1y

I was never a fan and I‘m not a big food channel person, however, this book has me enthralled.

Pickpick

Did I like this book? Yes. Do I wish that this book was better written, longer and went into more detail about Bourdain‘s life? Also yes.

I read this so y‘all don‘t have to! This is truly one of the worst books of the year. Not only does over half the content come verbatim from Kitchen Confidential and Medium Raw, the rest is catty gossip about his life before fame. The majority of folks Leerhsen interviewed were pre-fame friends, who he didn‘t stay tight with post-fame for whatever reason. Tony‘s a man, not a saint, but I don‘t feel he deserves to be blasted in a tabloid biography.

MicheleinPhilly I hope you didn‘t waste money on it! 1y
Megabooks @MicheleinPhilly @vivastory no!! This was a library book. I wouldn‘t have read it otherwise! 1y

britt_brooke I‘m reading this now. I couldn‘t resist, but it pissed me off immediately. I‘ll finish it, but will returning it to audible. Eff this author. 1y

If US Weekly (the tabloid) wrote a book about Bourdain, this would be it. A lot of recycled material from his own books/career/social media intermixed with mean juicy gossip. You don‘t want to admit to reading it, but it still ends up in your grocery cart. A total #BorrowNotBuy so far though!

Cinfhen Ha!!! Perfect description!! I saw this on #Scribd and was wondering if it‘s necessary. I feel like the oral biography was so good and encompassing that I probably don‘t need to read this 👆🏽 2y
JenReadsAlot I was curious about this one. 2y
MicheleinPhilly I read an article in the NYT about this book and really hate the idea of it. I don‘t agree with his ex‘s decision to grant access to his computer at all. I‘m definitely skipping it. 2y

Megabooks @MicheleinPhilly I missed that article, but it‘s probably going to be a pan if I finish it. Even if I can get past the sour grapes of so many, I can‘t get past the recycled material from KC and Medium Raw. 2y
Megabooks @JenReadsAlot I‘m considering bailing because of the huge amount of recycled material. 🤷🏻‍♀️🤷🏻‍♀️ 2y
Megabooks @Cinfhen the oral biography was so much better, and while I agree with this author that he is a man, not a saint, I prefer the positive spin on his life in 2y
Cinfhen I had the sense this book might be a #CashCow 😞 2y
Megabooks @Cinfhen tagged you in my review. This was terrible. I can‘t believe I finished it. 1y
