Chapel of Ease
Chapel of Ease: A Novel of the Tufa | Alex Bledsoe
9 posts | 4 read | 5 to read
The latest installment in Alex Bledsoe's critically-acclaimed Tufa series that Kirkus Reviews calls "powerful, character-driven drama...a sheer delight." (starred review) When Matt Johanssen, a young New York actor, auditions for "Chapel of Ease," an off-Broadway musical, he is instantly charmed by Ray Parrish, the show's writer and composer. They soon become friends; Matt learns that Ray's people call themselves the Tufa and that the musical is based on the history of his isolated home town. But there is one question in the show's script that Ray refuses to answer: what is buried in the ruins of the chapel of ease? As opening night approaches, strange things begin to happen. A dreadlocked girl follows Ray and spies on him. At the press preview, a strange Tufa woman warns him to stop the show. Then, as the rave reviews arrive, Ray dies in his sleep. Matt and the cast are distraught, but there's no question of shutting down: the run quickly sells out. They postpone opening night for a week and Matt volunteers to take Ray's ashes back to Needsville. He also hopes, while he's there, to find out more of the real story behind the play and discover the secret that Ray took to his grave. Matt's journey into the haunting Appalachian mountains of Cloud County sets him on a dangerous path, where some secrets deserve to stay buried.

Love the Tufa!

Cathythoughts Hi Sheila , I‘ve just seen a post you liked with my name on it , with my Litsy picture ( & Facebook logo ) & name & this really worries me as I‘m not on FB for years now & so could not have posted this on Facebook ? It was also @JoeStalksBeck .... not sure what‘s going on ? No ill will intended at all , just don‘t understand (edited) 5y
Shemac77 What?! I have no idea. It was on FB? I‘m rarely on FB. And haven‘t looked anyone up from Litsy on FB. I‘m really curious as well. It makes no sense 5y

Shemac77 @Cathythoughts Unless you‘ve read these books? The only thing I can think of is that I went back to who tagged the books and liked their reviews. Within litsy though. 5y
Cathythoughts @Shemac77 Sorry for all the confusion ... I really don‘t know what happened.. it‘s worrying , but I‘m just going to let it go ... and again , no ill will intended. Take care friend & chat soon X 5y
Shemac77 No worries! I‘d have concerns too. @Cathythoughts If you‘re more comfortable unfriending me on here; I totally understand. 5y
Cathythoughts @Shemac77 oh no ! I definitely don‘t want to unfriend you. I really like being friends with you on Litsy... it‘s all good ... I probably over- reacted ( it‘s been known to happen) ... I‘m sure whatever glitch it was won‘t happen again...I think your right I must have liked the same book as you & then some wires got crossed.. I hope I havnt upset you. My Litsy app went down last night but it‘s up & running again 👍🏻♥️ 5y
Shemac77 @Cathythoughts I‘m not upset at all! I‘m super creeped out about it. Social media is getting freakier and freakier. Someone said that FB “listens” to conversations then tailors their ads to what you‘ve said or written. I find that bone chilling. 5y

The Tufa series by Bledsoe has become one of my favorite contemporary fantasy series. I love the mix of Fae and Appalachian folklore and the importance of music that is woven together in the stories.

I have written before of my love for Alex Bledsoe‘s Tufa books. I swear, I become more enamored with Cloud County & the Tufa with every entry in this series. Bledsoe‘s latest does not disappoint. My favorite characters are back – Bliss Overbay, Bronwyn Chess, & Mandalay Harris – plus some new folks who show great promise. If you haven‘t read the Tufa stories, don‘t start with this one. Go get Hum & the Shiver and start from there. You‘ll thank me!

Not my favorite of the Tufa series by a long shot but decent enough long weekend trip reading.

Bledsoe's stories of the Tufa just get better and better. There's more "real world" in this one than usual, but it works. The familiar Tufa characters are here, and we get a glimpse of life in Cloud County without Rockhouse, but the real stars here are Matt and C.C. whose budding same-sex romance is handled beautifully. A definite yes for Bledsoe's readers; if you haven't read his earlier Tufa novels, read them in order.
