The Pirate's Wife
The Pirate's Wife: The Remarkable Story of Mrs. Captain Kidd | Daphne Palmer Geanacopoulos
5 posts | 5 read | 8 to read
The dramatic and deliciously swashbuckling story of Sarah Kidd, the wife of the famous pirate Captain Kidd, charting her transformation from New York socialite to international outlaw during the Golden Age of Piracy Captain Kidd was one of the most notorious pirates to ever prowl the seas. But few know that Kidd had an accomplice, a behind-the-scenes player who enabled his plundering and helped him outpace his enemies. That accomplice was his wife, Sarah Kidd, a well-to-do woman whose extraordinary life is a lesson in reinvention and resourcefulness. Twice widowed by twenty-one and operating within the strictures of polite society in seventeenth- and eighteenth-century New York, Sarah secretly aided and abetted her husband, fighting alongside him against his accusers. More remarkable still was that Sarah not only survived the tragedy wrought by her infamous husband's deeds, but went on to live a successful and productive life as one of New York's most prominent citizens. Marshaling in newly discovered primary-source documents from archives in London, New York and Boston, historian and journalist Daphne Palmer Geanacopoulos reconstructs the extraordinary life of Sarah Kidd, uncovering a rare example of the kind of life that pirate wives lived during the Golden Age of Piracy. A compelling tale of love, treasure, motherhood and survival, this landmark work of narrative nonfiction weaves together the personal and the epic in a sweeping historical story of romance and adventure.

More work travel and a drive to Houston gave me ample time to finish this fascinating true story of Sarah Kidd, wife of famous privateer (or pirate?) Captain Kidd. Less swashbuckling than I had hoped but still compelling if you are a history buff. #BookspinBingo @TheAromaofBooks

Megabooks I thought this was really interesting! 6mo

A very, very well researched historical biography of Sarah who over her lifetime was married 4x, yet the marriage that was the most damning to her reputation was the third as she found herself married to a man who fell from the high ranks of society into a life of supposed piracy. Her legacy and life well documented through recently discovered papers, diaries, wills, and court documents all weave to tell her story where before it was lost to time.

Sharpeipup @maria514626 I would say so which is good since this is a library book. 1y
mabell I pulled a few boxes from our neighborhood single stream bin and “recycled” them to little libraries. They were still perfectly good books! 1y

I‘ve read the research that shows if you can move/exercise in the hospital, it is associated with better health outcomes. So every 2-3 hours, I‘d walk a lap or two of the floor while listening to this. And Kidd‘s story is remarkable! She survived two husbands and ran a store to prevent one from bankruptcy in colonial Manhattan. Later, she married Captain Kidd for love and stood by him as he faced trial for piracy. Fascinating, short bio. #NFNov
