In My Humble Opinion: My So-Called Life
In My Humble Opinion: My So-Called Life | Soraya Roberts
4 posts | 1 read | 9 to read
"A smart, engaging investigation of the show that brought real teens to TV" "My So-Called Life" lasted only 19 episodes from 1994 to 1995, but in that time it earned many devoted viewers, including the showrunners who would usher in the teen TV boom of the late 90s and the new millennium. With its focus on 15-year-old Angela Chase s search for her identity, "MSCL" s realistic representation of adolescence on TV was groundbreaking; without her there would be no Buffy or Felicity, Rory Gilmore or Veronica Mars. The series broadcast coincided with the arrival of third-wave feminism, the first feminist movement to make teen voices a priority, and Angela became their small-screen spokesperson. From her perspective, "MSCL" explored gender, identity, sexuality, race, class, body image, and other issues vital to the third wave (and the world). To this day, passionate fans dissect everything from what Rickie Vasquez did for gay representation to what Jordan Catalano did for leaning, and Soraya Roberts makes an invaluable contribution to that conversation with "In My Humble Opinion.""

Laalaleighh Laughing so hard at your twilight comment 😂😂😂 7y
thegirlwiththelibrarybag Haha, many a work discussion has centred over how much better the books would be if it was about Edward and Jacob's love... 7y
JackOBotts @Laalaleighh @thegirlwiththelibrarybag I always thought of Bella as a wet blanket...a terrible character. The tension between Edward & Jacob as star-crossed lovers would've been far more rich and interesting. Bella had me rolling my eye for 3 books. 🙄 (Yes, I still read them all...) 7y

thegirlwiththelibrarybag @JackOBotts, I read them all but drew the line at the last movie... (and wish I'd drawn it for the last two) 7y
L_auren Yes hated Lucy Barton so much 7y
JackOBotts @L_auren I don't know if I "missed" something, but I don't know why/how Lucy Barton was such a favorite! My entire book club felt similarly. ???? 7y
JackOBotts @thegirlwiththelibrarybag I pretty much laughed my way through those final movies...I couldn't help it! 7y
thegirlwiththelibrarybag @JackOBotts, at the time, I got quite miffed at how easy the vampires became to kill... first movie: they needed the whole family, fourth movie: one blow to the head and they broke apart like a stone statue... I remember thinking that they did the birth scene really well tho - Bella looked awful... the special effects were all over the place. 7y

This was a great quick read. Definitely recommended for fans of My So-called Life, who would like a little more insight about the writers of the show and how the characters came to be. This show will always have a special place in my heart... #angelaandjordanforever

Funny how much of this show I've watched and how little I really THOUGHT about it. I love My So-Called Life, but Roberts puts it in a whole new light.
