A Very German Christmas
A Very German Christmas: The Greatest Austrian, Swiss and German Holiday Stories of All Time | Hermann Hesse, Thomas Mann, Rainer Maria Rilke, Johann Wolfgang Goethe, Martin Suter, Heinrich Heine, Kästner Erich
4 posts | 3 read | 3 to read
A continuation of the very popular Very Christmas series conveying a festive spirit from the place where many Christmas traditions were invented. A delightful and unpredictable collection redolent of candle-lit trees, St. Nikolaus, gingerbread, the Christkindl, roast goose and red cabbage, Gugelhopf and stollen cakes, accompanied by plenty of schnapps.

Pickpick

It‘s a rainy miserable afternoon here (at least it‘s not as bad as the US!) and I finally gave up with the work thing at lunchtime, so no better time than to finish off this little Christmas gem.

Thanks very much for sending this to me @julesG ! 😘🎄

julesG You are very welcome! Seeing the book in your hand it really is a small gem. 😉 1y
vivastory This sounds interesting. I recently saw the Penguin Modern Classics edition of Steppenwolf & it is fittingly wild 1y

Mehso-so

I enjoyed this on one level as a quick and light read but I was disappointed with the book as a whole; it feels like lazy publishing to make a quick buck at Christmas.

The excerpts have no introduction so there is no context for each piece. It wasn't until I finished that I realised there is a brief paragraph biog of each author at the back but this book would be much improved with a brief introduction to each story. Ok but I can't recommend.

Bibliomania As a note the American edition (publ 2020) has the title A Very German Christmas; the UK edition (publ 2022) has the title A German Christmas. 1y

German-language poems, short stories, tales and novel extracts set at Christmas, but not necessarily full of “Christmas spirit“. In fact, they're often on the bleaker side, and all the better for it.

AllDebooks That is something different. I need to seek this out x 1y
Dilara @AllDebooks I was pleasantly surprised by this anthology and I'd recommend it to anyone who doesn't want schmaltzy Christmas stories and enjoys classics. I found it on scribd and I am looking forward to reading the other books in the collection: A Very Italian Christmas, A Very Scandinavian Christmas, etc. 1y
AllDebooks @Dilara I've saved the Scandi one on Scribd. I think the German one will be interesting as a lot of UK Christmas traditions originate in Germany. Nigel Slater talks about it in the one I'm reading atm. (On Scribd) 1y

Look what arrived today! @julesG ðŸ˜

Perfect timing for Advent, so I‘m very much looking forward to reading these stories in the run-up to Christmas, cosied up by the fire! 😘

julesG Enjoy! It looks very cosy with the logs and crackling fire. 1y
