Couplets: A Love Story
Couplets: A Love Story | Maggie Millner
5 posts | 4 read | 6 to read
An endlessly inventive, wise, exhilarating book." --Garth Greenwell, author of Cleanness and What Belongs to You A dazzling love story in poems about one woman's coming-out, coming-of-age, and coming undoneA woman lives an ordinary life in Brooklyn. She has a boyfriend. They share a cat. She writes poems in the prevailing style. She also has dreams: of being seduced by a throng of older women, of kissing a friend in a dorm-room closet. But the dreams are private, not real. One night, she meets another woman at a bar, and an escape hatch swings open in the floor of her life. She falls into a consuming affair--into queerness, polyamory, kink, power and loss, humiliation and freedom, and an enormous surge of desire that lets her leave herself behind. Maggie Millner's captivating, seductive debut is a love story in poems that explores obsession, gender, identity, and the art and act of literary transformation. In rhyming couplets and prose vignettes, Couplets chronicles the strictures, structures, and pitfalls of relationships--the mirroring, the pleasing, the small jealousies and disappointments--and how the people we love can show us who we truly are.

I don‘t read much poetry but would enjoy more like this slim volume. It felt so self-involved at first, and then, maybe all love stories should be given how utterly personal they are. How the asides into theory and portions of other books were used by the narrator to reflect on their experiences reminded me a bit of another book I loved, The Argonauts by Maggie Nelson. Being reminded of a book you love while reading a new one is always good ❤️

Couplets is a novel in verse, super short, about a woman who leaves her male partner for a woman. Told in four parts, the narrator compares the two relationships. Though it makes it‘s point, it skimmed the surface. A great companion to Big Swiss, which I read right after this for Camp ToB.

A woman (the author I think) is living “her second adolescence — like the second first love”.
The book, written in verse intermingled with sections of prose poetry, follows the illusions and disillusions of this second first love, this time with a woman. The result is sexy and vulnerable and beautiful.

I‘m moonlighting from #camplitsy23, to read some of the books from that imposter, CampToB! 🤣

This is a very short book, only 1.5 hours on audio and is a love story told partly in verse and partly in a series of vignettes. Set in Brooklyn, the MC breaks up with her boyfriend to embark upon her first gay relationship.

It‘s funny in places, sexy in places, and sad in places.

Not sure who else is reading Camp ToB books? @BarbaraBB @Cinfhen

Deblovestoread I am. My library hold just came in on Couplets and waiting on Big Swiss to start. 1y
squirrelbrain Hey @Deblovestoread 👋. I just started on Big Swiss about half an hour ago! I decided to listen to Couplets early as I had a pile of ironing to do today. 🙄 I also had time whilst ironing to start on the audio of Lone Women. 1y
Deblovestoread I‘ll be interested to see your review about Lone Woman. I just gave my copy to my daughter to read first. I‘m a bit of a wimp when it comes to anything classified as “horror” so she is my pre reader. I don‘t mind creepy but can‘t stand gore. 1y

squirrelbrain I‘ll let you know how I get on @Deblovestoread - depends on how much driving I need to do as to how far I get as that‘s how I do most of my audio. 1y
