Introducing Antonia Scott--the most compelling and original detective since Lisbeth Salander--in Juan Gómez-Jurado's Red Queen, the #1 international award-winning bestseller & thriller that has taken the world by storm. Antonia Scott--the daughter of a British diplomat and a Spanish mother--has a gifted forensic mind, whose ability to reconstruct crimes and solve baffling murders is legendary. But after a personal trauma, she's refused to continue her work or even leave her apartment. Jon Gutierrez, a police officer in Bilbao--disgraced, suspended, and about to face criminal charges--is offered a chance to salvage his career by a secretive organization that works in the shadows to direct criminal investigations of a highly sensitive nature. All he has to do is succeed where many others have failed: Convince a recalcitrant Antonia to come out of her self-imposed retirement, protecting her and helping her investigate a new, terrifying case. The case is a macabre, ritualistic murder--a teen-aged boy from a wealthy family whose body was found without a drop of blood left in it. But the murder is just the start. A high-ranking executive and daughter of one of the richest men in Spain is kidnapped, a crime which is tied to the previous murder. Behind them both is a hidden mastermind with even more sinister plans. And the only person with a chance to see the connections, solve the crimes and successfully match wits with the killer before tragedy strikes again...is Antonia Scott.

This is the first in a trilogy written by a Spanish author. It is a dark thriller that follows a disgraced cop & a genius woman who work behind the scenes to solve crimes. It has been compared to the books by Stieg Larsson and it also reminded of me Pierre Lemaitre's work. Not only are the characters fascinating, the author has added thought provoking morality issues to the plot. I really enjoyed it & will be adding the rest to my TBR list. 4.25/5

Next up is this thriller in translation set in Madrid. I‘m almost 100pgs in and loving it so far! It‘s giving me Red Dragon/Dragon Tattoo vibes so far & im hoping the next two in the series are translated to English very soon!

tonymp I hope they are soon, too, for your enjoyment because I've read all three and they are awesome! Have fun with Jon and Antonia! 2y

Bk3 from my #BookHaul is one I came across on IG on a list of 10 most wanted reads of 2023. Translated from Spanish, I think it may be the 3rd in the series. Does anyone know if the other 2, White King & Black Wolf have been translated yet? Antonia Scott is not a policewoman or lawyer. But she has solved dozens of crimes, but never leaves her attic in Madrid & doesn‘t have visitors. Which is why the footsteps coming up the stairs are worrying her…

This was good. It was “thrilling†and it moved along at a great pace. A disgraced police inspector, a mental savant, and a shadowy organization seeking clues to bring down a mastermind of criminal acts. People threw out semblance to Lisbeth Salander and Mikel Blomqvist (Dragon Tattoo) in early reviews but I actually want to give her the benefit of a female Sherlock Holmes. 5âï¸

What a fun and fast thriller! Spanning just a few days, disgraced inspector Jon is forced to work with a shadowy agency to solve high profile crimes on the downlow alongside genius but damaged Antonia. Smoothly translated, fast-paced and from a variety of perspectives that allows levity to break up the tension & exudes a cinematic flair, I genuinely can‘t wait for the sequel! Some parts may feel familiar but it has an overall fresh feel to it!

I will probably be in the minority here over this (originally in Spanish) beginner to a trilogy. Taking place in Bilbao Spain, Antonia Scott is a forensic genius who is legendary at solving baffling crimes and works for a specialized secret agency until a personal tragic event pushes her into a self-imposed retirement. She reluctantly returns with a new partner, Jon Gutierrez, a disgraced and suspended police officer, to investigate a macabre 🔻

robinb murder and possibly related subsequent kidnapping. There‘s a very descriptive violent encounter with police/villain and some surprising twists, but I found myself not as invested as I should have been. From the beginning I felt I was playing catch-up with the narrative, and I never really connected well with either protagonist. I felt alternately pitying off and frustrated with Antonia, and Jon seemed almost superfluous to me. 🔻 2y
robinb The villain‘s storyline was intriguing but also a bit murky in some details. Overall, not stellar but OK, I guess…3/5âï¸ 2y
