How much would you give to win the world? Zhu Yuanzhang, the Radiant King, is riding high after her victory that tore southern China from its Mongol masters. Now she burns with a new desire: to seize the throne and crown herself emperor. But Zhu isn't the only one with imperial ambitions. Her neighbor in the south, the courtesan Madam Zhang, wants the throne for her husband--and she's strong enough to wipe Zhu off the map. To stay in the game, Zhu will have to gamble everything on a risky alliance with an old enemy: the talented but unstable eunuch general Ouyang, who has already sacrificed everything for a chance at revenge on his father's killer, the Great Khan. Unbeknownst to the southerners, a new contender is even closer to the throne. The scorned scholar Wang Baoxiang has maneuvered his way into the capital, and his lethal court games threaten to bring the empire to its knees. For Baoxiang also desires revenge: to become the most degenerate Great Khan in history--and in so doing, make a mockery of every value his Mongol warrior family loved more than him. All the contenders are determined to do whatever it takes to win. But when desire is the size of the world, the price could be too much for even the most ruthless heart to bear...

I read She Who Became the Sun in one sitting. I was completely engrossed. I kept having to force myself to go back to He Who Drowned the World.

I'm not even sure what it was that I wasn't enjoying. It wasn't as tightly plotted as the previous book and there were pacing issues.

⬇️

PuddleJumper I would still recommend this duology. It's still a good historical fantasy book. I just wasn't as into it as the first one and I think that disappointment has coloured my opinion somewhat.

Selling my mystery books at a craft fair today. Started reading this in the low points. Got an hour left and it's completely dead so hopefully I'll get through a bit more!

This is my most anticipated December read. I keep putting it off because I enjoyed the first one at much and I'm scared it won't be as good

Pickpick

Characters weren't likable - they were morally grey. I really love that kind of characters. Like I said they weren't likable but I love to read about them xD

This was a dark and ugly story, but I loved it. I loved political plotting and betrayals.

This was a great story about people who had lust for power and oh boy how far they were willing to go! Reading this was like watching a train wreck.

I don't know what happened but I had to give up on this one. The shift in character of the main character was too much, and the story languishes far too long before getting anywhere. Disappointing because the first book was so good.

I loved the first book of this apparent duo, but I gave the audio 2 hours and I just can‘t get into this one. So, back to the library it goes!

Went to Fountain Bookstore‘s event for He Who Drowned the World by Shelley Parker-Chan, author Alix E. Harrow and audiobook narrator Natalie Naudus. The discussion was a blast: writing (and recording) in cubbards/closets, writing angry characters, and that Parker-Chan writes in Excel.

behudd Wow what a cool group! 1y
BillBlume @behudd it was amazing. I went because of Alix (love her writing and this past October, I moderated a panel with her on it at a writers conference) but loved all of them. Always love getting to listen to other writers share their passion and thought process for their art. 1y
SamAnne Sounds like a great event! 1y
