This is one of the only history books that I truly enjoyed, Kaplan's writing style is so full of life, it makes you feel as if you know the people present in the story. A journalistic/travelling way of explaining major events is so enjoyable! Definitely a worthy read, even for people that aren't interested in history

I‘m a little bit disappointed. I expected, according to the blurb, “the most insightful and timely work on the Balkans to date", but I got political travelogue with few short interviews, some historical facts and some author‘s personal observations of the way people live in Balkan Peninsula. ⭐️⭐️⭐️ #Nonfiction2021 - about hope #Booked2021 #hear #here

Riveted_Reader_Melissa That is disappointing! Sorry 4y
Simona @Riveted_Reader_Melissa It was my fault, I expected too much🤷‍♀️ 4y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @Simona I don‘t think you can blame yourself when it‘s tagged the most insightful, etc, etc and you got a light travel memoir full of author opinions instead. I think they oversold it. 4y

A quick, intense travelogue describing the conditions in Bulgaria, Romania, and Greece in the 1980s and 1990s. A quick history lesson here and there along the way. A spellcheck would have saved some irritation but it was a small price to pay for the amount I learned.

Libby1 The book looks excellent and your cat is lovely. 😻 6y
Nebklvr @Libby1 It was a good book. My cat is evil😹 6y

Texreader Uck! Unfortunately this reminded me of a backwater restaurant I went to as a kid where the pancake syrup was in a metal pouring cup with metal lid and dispensed drowned ants with the syrup. So yes, any restaurant that didn‘t feed us ants was a swell place to go. So sorry to be so descriptive but that quote just brought that memory so clearly back to mind. 6y
Nebklvr @Texreader Oh, my......it sounds like you have similar horror stories. That would put me off pancakes for life 6y

This has some interesting bits but it has already made me nauseous twice with violent massacres and I am not even through the prologue....we‘ll see....
