The Golden Gate | Amy Chua

Amy Chua's debut novel, The Golden Gate, is a sweeping, evocative, and compelling historical thriller that paints a vibrant portrait of a California buffeted by the turbulent crosswinds of a world at war and a society about to undergo massive change. In Berkeley, California, in 1944, Berkeley Homicide Detective Al Sullivan has just left the swanky Claremont Hotel after a drink in the bar when a former presidential candidate is assassinated in one of the rooms upstairs. A rich industrialist with enemies among the anarchist factions on the far left, Walter Wilkinson could have been targeted by any number of groups. But strangely, Sullivan’s investigation brings up the specter of another tragedy at the Claremont, ten years earlier: the death of seven-year-old Iris Stafford, a member of the Bainbridge family, one of the wealthiest in all of San Francisco. Some say she haunts the Claremont still. The many threads of the case keep leading Sullivan back to the three remaining Bainbridge heiresses, now adults: Iris’s sister, Isabella, and her cousins Cassie and Nicole. Determined not to let anything distract him from the truth—not the powerful influence of Bainbridges’ grandmother, or the political aspirations of Berkeley’s district attorney, or the interest of Chinese first lady Madame Chiang Kai-Shek in his findings—Sullivan follows his investigation to its devastating conclusion. Chua’s page-turning debut brings to life a historical era rife with turbulent social forces and groundbreaking forensic advances, when race and class defined the very essence of power, sex, and justice, and introduces a fascinating character in Detective Sullivan, a mixed race former Army officer who is still reckoning with his own history.

Some flaws, but overall good. The lengthy digressions into California's history take away from the narrative and the twists are a little messy but the characters and setting are good. I could see it becoming a series and I would continue reading if so.

I hauled a haul 🥰 A little birdy told me the Betrayals was dark academia, so had to feed my obsession.

(Waterstones website, it was Waterstones website that told me...)

Branwen What an excellent book haul! 💕📚 1y

While the premise seemed promising, after a quarter of the way through, I just couldn‘t bring myself to continue. The murder of a 1944 politician in San Francisco— even with the tantalizing prospect that it may be one of three society darlings— failed to capture my interest. Info-dumps galore here slow down the pacing & the social commentary feels at odds with the time period in a jarringly modern way that makes the characters feel inauthentic.

Had to DNF @ 44%. I love the time period & setting, & the historical research is so detailed - so detailed that unfortunately the mystery element is getting lost. Reading it is like wading through treacle.

My thanks to NetGalley & publishers, Atlantic Books/Corvus Books, for the opportunity to read an ARC, but I am having to DNF this one.

A murder mystery set in 1940s San Francisco. The author paid a lot of detail to historical accuracy, which is something I truly appreciate. Yet the main story seemed to be overshadowed by the history of the place at times. Furthermore the characters lacked depth and I didn't quite care for them.
