Thank you to Little Brown for the ARC!

I would like to start by saying that had this been a book I had had a choice in reading rather than a randomly sent ARC, I wouldn‘t have read it. This book meshed some VERY mature things with a really immature writing style that just felt wrong. The author would touch on things like fat-phobia or neglect from her boyfriend in one chapter and then completely ignore it the rest of the book. The ending ⬇️

Zoe-h ⬆️felt very abrupt and solved literally none of the problems brought up in the last three chapters. Just not my kind of book. 2.75⭐️

This was a lovely illustrated diary of a teenage girl that writer & artist Phoebe Wahl drew from her actual diaries. It is gorgeously nostalgic & teenage-angsty in a way that felt very relatable, & the artwork is warm & inviting. It's also unabashedly horny & romantic & "I have a crush so intense I will die" in a very organic way & I admire the body-positive message throughout. The music & theatre bits were my fave. Just a sweet & tender read.

I asked my husband (who‘s musical; I am not) what instrument‘s featured in the linked song. A theramin? An aquaphone? It‘s a singing saw — “like a literal saw that you bend & play with a violin bow.”

Clare-Dragonfly Hmm, I‘m sure I know other recorded songs with musical saw but I can‘t think of any at the moment. I see it more in live performances—like last week at the Renaissance Festival! 14mo

Children‘s picture book illustrator & author, Phoebe Wahl, has lightly fictionalized her journals from her teenage years, creating “Phoebe‘s Diary.” She intentionally left all the cringey bits and all the crass bits in. As someone who religiously tore up her previous diaries because she was too embarrassed to admit they existed, I see this as an extraordinary act of bravery! 👇🏻

monalyisha 1/2: I wouldn‘t recommend this book beyond its intended audience (YA) — unless you‘re already a fan (which I was). It also holds particular charm for elder Millennials; Phoebe includes her playlists and they‘re all on-point for us forever indie kids (Rilo Kiley, Sufjan Stevens, The Decemberists, Death Cab for Cutie, Neutral Milk Hotel, Ben Kweller, Belle & Sebastian, etc). 14mo

monalyisha 2/2: As Phoebe states in her Author‘s Note, she set out to share a story that does its part to combat “society‘s fatphobia and sex negativity, and the constant, unrelenting ways it teaches us to be ashamed of our bodies and what we want to do with them.” She stayed true to that by sharing her joys and her struggles. Just…be prepared to read EXTENSIVELY about obsessive crushes (true to life, tbh, but still a lot to take in 😅)! 14mo
