Playing with Books: The Art of Upcycling, Deconstructing, and Reimagining the Book | Jason Thompson
4 posts | 4 read | 6 to read
In these pages, Jason Thompson has curated an extensive and artistic range of both achievable upcycled crafts made from books and book pages and an amazing gallery that contains thought-provoking and beautiful works that transform books into art. The content encompasses a wide range of techniques and step-by-step projects that deconstruct and rebuild books and their parts into unique, upcycled objects. The book combines in equal measure bookbinding, woodworking, paper crafting, origami, and textile and decorative arts techniques, along with a healthy dose of experimentation and fun.The beautiful high-end presentation and stunning photography make this book a delightful, must-have volume for any book-loving artist or art-loving book collector.

Sacrilege!

Vexingcircumstance A lot of places will throw away copies of books if they've gotten to many of that book donated. Which is common with some popular books. Better to use them for artistic projects than to just throw them away. (edited) 8y
thegirlwiththelibrarybag It's a fine line, isn't it!? Torn between admiring people's creativity and mourning a lost book... but @Vexingcircumstance is right, better art than pulp or landfill. 8y
BooksForYears I would be tempted to craft with books, only if they were damaged or otherwise bound for the recycling bin. 8y

WanderingBookaneer @Vexingcircumstance : I actually agree... but it would still hurt a bit. 8y
Laalaleighh Only if they're all copies of The Scarlet Letter. 8y
AndreaReads When I want to do bookish crafts, I rescue books about to be recycled due to years of a abuse from student readers, but I loathe seeing crafts done with brand new books. I mean, have some respect people! 😉 8y
tournevis It all depends on the book. I mean a bad racist crummy obscure Canadian adventure nov from the 1930s would be fair game to me. 8y
WanderingBookaneer @tournevis : Does that exist? 8y
tournevis @WanderingBookaneer Oh yeah! I find quite a few every year at my husband's church book sale. 8y

Pickpick

So far I've done the wreath with 18 participants. Next up is paperback pumpkin then the flower as adult crafts at the library. I'm trying to stay with this one book for a while rather than constantly searching for different activities.

Finally folded a flower from book pages! This book is beautiful to look at and is created by a local artist.
