I read this as a tween when I smashed through all the John Marsden books and I don‘t think I particularly liked it - I enjoyed it so much more now when I can see the effects of trauma and growing up feeling displaced have had on Winter and not just sort of write her off as a rude teenager who asks a lot of questions. The heart of this story is about coming home, making peace with the past and making a better future for oneself. #DoubleSpin

MrsMalaprop I have this on my shelf & like you read it many years ago. 4y
thegirlwiththelibrarybag @MrsMalaprop, I have a reading log and I first read it in 2002 (which I added to GR once when I was procrastinating studying) - which was early high school - so definitely a different perspective now. Its a 3 hour audio book - if you were curious about revisiting. 4y

This was a very interesting book to read. At first I was confused about what was going on, but as we followed Winter on her journey, it became hard to put down.

elkeOriginal Agreed! The When the War Began series and the Ellie Chronicles are among my all time faves. 👍👍for John Marsden 💕 8y
thegirlwiththelibrarybag @elkeo, I'm yet to find a John Marsden book I haven't liked! I've seen him speak a few times - completely marvellous! Very happy to have my book signed (even if he did ask me if my name was short for something and then query the spelling). My favourite is 8y

Winter's past is heartbreaking.
