Hansel and Gretel (First Edition)
Hansel and Gretel (First Edition): The Original Brothers Grimm Fairytale | Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm, Rachel Louise Lawrence
1 post | 1 read
“Nibble, nibble, little louse! Who is nibbling at my house?” Translated from the first edition, experience the tale of Hansel and Gretel in its original form, as brother and sister are abandoned in a great forest by their parents, only to discover that someone far more sinister than wild animals awaits them… The final version of this classic fairytale—from the seventh and ultimate edition of the Brothers Grimm’s Children's and Household Tales—is also included. With these latest English translations, the original and final versions can be read back-to-back, showcasing the ever-evolving nature of fairytales. [Folklore Type: ATU-327A (The Children with the Witch) + ATU-1121: The Ogre’s Wife Burned in Her Own Oven]

@TheBookHippie
This was an interesting pair that I read back to back.
I never realized the mom was the villain the first edition.
The True Story of Hansel and Gretel was a unique retelling set during World War II. It was dark, twisted, and disturbing. I'm still not sure how I feel about it.

TheBookHippie It‘s all fascinating to me. Look how differently it is portrayed as hundreds of years go by. 6mo
tpixie Oh! Thanks! I forgot I had this book on my shelf. I‘ll have to read it!!! 6mo
tpixie Yes. So do you think the mother was the mean lady in the house that they killed? And that‘s why the mother was dead when they returned home??? that‘s what I was interpreting it as I read it this time and I thought maybe I was making it up. .. 6mo

TheBookHippie @tpixie Oh how interesting!!! I was going to look it up when I got home parent teacher conferences tonight! So we will just go with we are probably correct!! LOL 6mo
tpixie @TheBookHippie lol Yes!!! 6mo
IndoorDame @tpixie @TheBookHippie I saw that connection too this time, and I think I remember reading that connection in the intro commentary in a previous version I‘ve read. But I also wondered if the writer doesn‘t feel the need to punish the mother as part of the moral. Like letting her live after she tries to kill the children wouldn‘t be socially acceptable? 6mo
tpixie @IndoorDame that‘s a great point! 6mo
