My Brilliant Friend: the Graphic Novel: Based on the Novel by Elena Ferrante | Chiara Lagani
8 posts | 4 read | 2 to read
Elena Ferrante's New York Times bestselling masterpiece, My Brilliant Friend, book one of her Neapolitan Quartet, is now an extraordinary and vibrant graphic novel, with text adapted by Chiara Lagani, and illustrations by Mara Cerri. HBO's four-season TV adaptation of My Brilliant Friend has enjoyed tremendous success with critics and viewers in the U.S.; the books have also been adapted for the theater and radio plays. Here, for the first time, it is brought to vivid life as a graphic novel by one of Italy's most beloved illustrators. For Ferrante fans, for those new to Ferrante, for readers of graphic novels, Ferrante's My Brilliant Friend: the graphic novel is a thrilling new adaptation of one of the best loved novels of recent decades. Translated by Ferrante's long-time translator, Ann Goldstein, the graphic novel tells the enduring story of the complex friendship between Lila and Lenu in post-war Naples.

This graphic adaptation was a bit of both: great and terrible. The artwork was great in that it captured the unsettling nature of the girls‘ relationship, but it was terribly creepy, too. I think this would be best for readers who love the book already because this adaptation only provides the broad strokes of the story. I felt a bit lost never having read the actual book. At the same time, it didn‘t make me more likely to pick the full book up.

BarbaraBB That is too bad. I enjoyed the series but I can see why you wouldn‘t. I wouldn‘t reread them either. Hope you are doing okay considering the circumstances. I still need to write back but I‘ve been crazy busy with work. 😘 3mo

My up-next shelf is overflowing!! 😂🤦🏻‍♀️ My #bookspin and #doublespin aren‘t even on there because I started both today. Unfortunately, I‘m unsure of both. I‘m not really enjoying the art in the MBF adaptation. It‘s truly unsettling in a way I don‘t like! (It works well with the story but v creepy!) Invisible is more aimed at women in their 20s. I bought it in my 30s, but finally picking it up in my 40s the advice skews a bit young. We‘ll see!

BarbaraBB That shelf 😍😍 so many I don‘t know but I notice various Groff again (you really are a fan!) and I hope you‘ll love A Little Luck if you get to it. Have a great month, Meg ❤️🤍 3mo
TheAromaofBooks I'm having similar issues with my up-next windowsill! 😂 3mo
marleed Interesting stack! My fingers are always pinching out the next up stack of Litten‘s. I never realized I was so nosy! 🧐 3mo

Megabooks @BarbaraBB Groff this month‘s pick for #authoramonth. I‘m about to finish up a reread of Fates and Furies on audio. That book just evokes such strong feelings in me! I wasn‘t as sympathetic to Mathilde last time as I am this time. 🤨 3mo
Megabooks @BarbaraBB hoping to read A Little Luck soon. I love paperbacks for doctor‘s offices, and unfortunately, I‘ll be in a lot of those soon! 3mo
Megabooks @TheAromaofBooks the struggle is real!! 3mo
Megabooks @marleed I am nosy that way too!! 3mo
Chelsea.Poole Betty 😍😭 And I agree—just based on the cover of the GN it looks creepy! 3mo
Megabooks @Chelsea.Poole I hope to get to Betty soon, but I‘m reading a lot less this year than last. Unsure if that will turn around or if I just want to have a lighter year. The GN is just so creepy. I just want to finish at this point!! Probably won‘t read the other books if they‘re adapted. 3mo
BarbaraBB That‘s interesting, your feeling towards Mathilde! 3mo

Birthday gift from two beloved friends, read today (1/1/24).

Beautiful and unsettling, this graphic novel adaptation conveys through its art the sense of memories, sometimes vague, other times sharp and clear. The confines of their upbringing is felt perhaps most in the focused moments of glimpses of sky, the sea.

This brought back memories of reading the quartet years ago, the poignancy and the drama.

In this graphic novel retelling of the first in Elena Ferrente‘s Neapolitan quartet, Mari Cerri‘s impressionistic pencil and watercolour art carries much of what I loved about the original: the complicated emotional connection between two girls as they grow up into women in a dangerous and chauvinistic environment. The story condensed to major plot points is all I needed to love this story all over again. Translation by Ann Goldstein.

Why don‘t we write a book, too?
Yes, but when school‘s over.

I‘m a huge fan of Ferrante‘s novel (I loved the entire Neapolitan Quartet) so had to check out this new graphic novel adaptation. Striking artwork and captures the essence of the original. I mean, the novel is better so definitely read that first if you are interested. But, if you‘ve already read it or you‘re curious about the story and just want a lovely condensed version, this is well done.
