Reykjavík: A Crime Story | Ragnar Jonasson, Katrín Jakobsdóttir
7 posts | 7 read | 8 to read
With over four million copies sold worldwide, Ragnar Jónasson, along with Katrín Jakobsdóttir, brings us a gripping and chilling new thriller, Reykjavík. What happened to Lára? Iceland, 1956. Fourteen-year-old Lára decides to spend the summer working for a couple on the small island of Videy, just off the coast of Reykjavík. In early August, the girl disappears without a trace. Time passes, and the mystery becomes Iceland‘s most infamous unsolved case. What happened to the young girl? Is she still alive? Did she leave the island, or did something happen to her there? Thirty years later, as the city of Reykjavík celebrates its 200th anniversary, journalist Valur Robertsson begins his own investigation into Lára's case. But as he draws closer to discovering the secret, and with the eyes of Reykjavík upon him, it soon becomes clear that Lára's disappearance is a mystery that someone will stop at nothing to keep unsolved . . .

Bailedbailed

Part 2: I bail. Too much backstory, too slow for me. I no longer care what happened, who did it and why. Moving on to another book.

Pickpick

I was in a bit of an audiobook slump recently and this one got me right out of it. I really liked it. Fast paced and I wanted to know what was happening. Great on audio because of the Icelandic pronunciation.

Bailedbailed

I really tried with this one. A young girl disappeared thirty years ago on an island off the coast of Iceland. Sounds promising right? Every ten years she becomes a headline and the story tells us what‘s happening with her cold case. Which is nothing. I gave up half way through.

Bailedbailed

I just don't find this mystery, about the disappearance of a teenager 30 years prior, interesting enough to finish.

dabbe #hailthebail! 🤩🤩🤩 5mo
LitStephanie @dabbe oh I like that! In the past couple of years, I have been training myself to just bail instead of slogging through to the bitter end of books I don't like. 5mo
dabbe @LitStephanie It's a reminder to me that there are too many other fantastic books out there and too little time to read them all! 🤩😂🤗 5mo

LitStephanie @dabbe agreed. Unlike movies, there are just way more excellent books out there than I will ever get to. 5mo
Texreader @dabbe @LitStephanie I agree! Our time is too valuable and too short with our long tbrs 5mo
dabbe @Texreader Our TBRs are never-ending, aren't they? 😂 5mo

I enjoyed this cold case mystery set mostly in 1986. It gave the reader a nice sense of the setting, and it had a couple of surprising twists.

Iceland 1956 - 14 yo Lara disappears without a trace. Rumors abound-she packed up and left, she killed herself, was kidnapped…1996 - Valur Robersson begins to investigate the 30 yo disappearance on his own, but someone‘s trying to thwart him…
