I thought I‘d love this cozy fantasy, but I just could not get into it. Every time I sat down to read it I fell asleep. It could have been that it‘s a busy, tiring time but for whatever reason, I had to set it aside. I‘m bummed!

I am so tired of portentous -- or at this point, pretentious -- sentence fragments and there are three hours left to read! Think I'll probably DNF. 😔

I love D20, so I wanted to read the source material for Starstruck Odyssey. Friends, I just can‘t get into it. It‘s very 80‘s and 90‘s comics and that‘s not my jam. I‘ve tried twice. I couldn‘t force myself even on a plane. #noteverybookusforeverybody #dnf #bookspinbingo

I had to bail at page 63, the spin was making me too dizzy to keep reading.

There might be a good story in here but it‘s, unfortunately, buried beneath clumsy, juvenile writing. The main character, who actually prays to the fuhrer like he‘s a god, is staggeringly naive and the focus is more on her forbidden romance than the history. I think I just like my historical fiction to have a little more meat on its bones, so I bailed around page 150.

At 45%, I‘m cutting my losses and bailing. It started off so strong that I was sure it would be one of my favorites of the year and then it just became a slog. What should have been a warm hug of found family cozy fantasy (even with the underlying theme of grief) just became…something else. It‘s giving dull and icky vibes. (Pardon Tasha‘s dragon carcass in the background 💀🐉)

I tried this for an off-Litsy reading challenge, but I just couldn‘t. I see that it‘s clearly setting this up to show how horrifying HH is and how he‘s trying to convince the reader he isn‘t, but even just his description of seeing the girl for the first time made me realize I don‘t want to go there. Not even with the dulcet tones of Jeremy Irons reading to me.

While I really enjoyed Mickey 7, I just couldn't get into this book. The humor felt very forced, and I found the lead character dull and too given to just letting things happen instead of taking charge.

Bailing at 16%. The recounting of the child and sexual abuse on this is too much for me to handle at this time.

I hadn‘t expect to bail on this one since I enjoyed Vuongs debut novel, but there‘s that. This one too is well written but to me it was rather boring. Drugs and poverty are often a recipe for a repetitive story and unfortunately this story is no exception. I didn‘t care enough to finish it. I have to admit audio didn‘t help either, my mind kept drifting off.
