Book at War: How Reading Shaped Conflict and Conflict Shaped Reading
Book at War: How Reading Shaped Conflict and Conflict Shaped Reading | Andrew Pettegree
2 posts | 1 to read
A "magisterial" (Sunday Times) illumination of how books were used in war across the twentieth century--both as weapons and as agents for peace We tend not to talk about books and war in the same breath--one ranks among humanity's greatest inventions, the other among its most terrible. But as esteemed literary historian Andrew Pettegree demonstrates, the two are deeply intertwined. The Book at War explores the various roles that books have played in conflicts throughout the globe. Winston Churchill used a travel guide to plan the invasion of Norway, lonely families turned to libraries while their loved ones were fighting in the trenches, and during the Cold War both sides used books to spread their visions of how the world should be run. As solace or instruction manual, as critique or propaganda, books have shaped modern military history--for both good and ill. With precise historical analysis and sparkling prose, The Book at War accounts for the power--and the ambivalence--of words at war.

Stopped by Main Street Books in Lafayette, IN (bummed I couldn‘t find them in the database 🫤) on our drive to Indy. What a fun store, definitely worth a visit 😍 Found a good sounding book, some magnetic bookmarks (lost my old ones and they are so handy!!) and a tote. Because of course 😇

KadaGul @Aims42 I love ❤️ the tote 👜 and bookmark 🔖. Very Bookish 6mo

Aims42 @Amiable Lol! It‘s the same at our house 😂 I don‘t even want to think of the tote to book ratio, it‘s probably pretty close at this point lol 6mo

Aims42 @jlhammar I told the bookseller how much I enjoyed this one 👇 and she said, “Oh! You‘re going to find this one just as fascinating!!” 🙌 6mo

Instead of an Xmas party where I work we got credit that would be what they spend on each of us on the party (£30 per person) on our colleague portal that allows you to get savings on certain stores or websites or you can create vouchers for those stores or websites so I converted mine to National Book Tokens and got this book I had my eye on. I think this is the better solution don't you agree? 😂📚📖
