Soundtrack of Silence
Soundtrack of Silence: Love, Loss, and a Playlist for Life | Matt Hay
7 posts | 4 read | 2 to read
An inspiring memoir of a young man who discovered he was going completely deaf just at the moment hed fallen in love for the first time. As a child, Matt Hay didnt know his hearing wasnt the way everyone else processed soundbecause of the workarounds he did to fit in, even the school nurse didnt catch his condition at the annual hearing and vision checks. But by the time he was a prospective college student and couldnt pass the entrance requirements for West Point, Hays condition, generated by a tumor, was unavoidable: his hearing was going, and fast. A personal soundtrack was Hays determined compensation for his condition. As a typical Midwestern kid growing up in the 1980s whose life events were pegged to pop music, Hay planned to commit his favorite songs to memory. He prepared a mental playlist of the bands he loved and created a way to tap into his most resonant memories. And the track he needed to cement most clearly? The one he and his new girlfriend, Norathe love of his lifelistened to in the car on their first date. Made vivid with references to instantly recognizable songsfrom the Eagles to Elton John, Bob Marley to Bing Crosby, U2 to Peter FramptonSoundtrack of Silence asks readers to run the soundtrack of their own lives through their minds. Its an involving memoir of loss and disability, and, ultimately, a both unique and universal love story.

Memoirs built around music are my jam. This was one of the harder ones to read because the narrator is faced with so many trials and tribulations. Rather than find inspiration in the music, I found inspiration in his love story. His soundtrack makes for an interesting playlist, sure. But it is his partnership with Nora that is award winning.

As a music lover, this memoir hit hard!

But don‘t go into this memoir thinking that you are going to find a Matt that is down on his luck for what life has dealt him. Instead, you will find how you can completely make life work for you when you have the determination, and the support of your loved ones (We all need a Nora in our lives!)

Music tracks referenced are *Chef‘s Kiss*

LOVED! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ #NetGalley

Here‘s my review for this book that I read for Netgalley and a song that matches this book. I chose The Sounds Of Silence by Simon & Garfunkel because it‘s mentioned in this book and I‘m sharing a link to the song in the comments. I‘m counting this book as an Impulse Read for the #wintergames.

On Sale: January 9, 2024

I decided to read this book. I have to read this one for Netgalley. It‘s coming out January 9, 2024. It‘s good so far. It‘s about a man who‘s losing his hearing while he‘s falling in love for the first time.
