#1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLERHigh school all-American Neely Crenshaw was probably the best quarterback ever to play for the legendary Messina Spartans. Fifteen years have gone by since those glory days, and Neely has come home to Messina to bury Coach Eddie Rake, the man who molded the Spartans into an unbeatable football dynasty. Now, as Coach Rake's boys sit in the bleachers waiting for the dimming field lights to signal his passing, they replay the old games, relive the old glories, and try to decide once and for all whether they love Eddie Rakeor hate him. For Neely Crenshaw, a man who must finally forgive his coachand himselfbefore he can get on with life, the stakes are especially high.

I don't usually read books about sports, but I really enjoyed this look at what happens to football heroes when they can no longer play. The characters in this book felt like people I could run into in real life and their connections to each other were wonderfully written. I also like the various discussions around the idea of how adults treat teenagers who are athletes versus the ones who are involved in activities outside of sports.

sisilia I haven‘t read John Grisham for ages! I think the last one that I read (The Brethren) was 20 years ago 🙈 4y
JacintaMCarter @sisilia This is the first of his books I‘ve read. 4y
marleed I‘ve thrifted a full shelf on JG books because they are so readily available. M working my way through -trying to read at least one a month. I like most of them. There‘s a rhythm to them - almost there own genre. So I try to compare one against another rather than my books by other authors. 4y
BarbaraBB I thought he wrote only thrillers... 4y

Reecaspieces This is a great book! 5y
MoonWitch94 @Reecaspieces It really is. I had a relationship with a teacher in HS that reminded me of the coach. 5y
Reecaspieces @MoonWitch94 I think we all did!!! Part of the culture!!! And John Grisham nailed it. 5y

Did I choose this Grisham because Friday night high school football goes with October? Yes I did. Did I take this pic so I could sneak in this super cute purse gifted to me by a sister? Yes I did!

This is one of my all-time favorite books. It is about Football, but it‘s so much more than Football 🏈 And the Eagles 🦅 are playing, too! #FallisBooked #October6th #Football

Not his usual book. Parts were good, but it did not really grab me.

This book is one of my all-time favorite books. My pages are highlighted like crazy because it‘s filled with beautiful dialogue that evokes strong emotions. Even if you are not a sports fan, I dare you to not love this novel. #thebleachers

Kaila-ann I picked this one up at a library sale 😊 6y
MoonWitch94 @Kaila-ann Did you love it? 6y
Kaila-ann @MoonWitch94 I haven‘t gotten to you it yet 😳. I‘ve heard good things so it may get bumped up the list. 6y
MoonWitch94 @Kaila-ann Yes! Bump it up Haha 😉 6y

This book was pretty good, but it was slow at times. I wouldn't go it out my way to recommend this book but I also wouldn't say don't read this book. It is the kind of book that doesn't stand it to me in any kind of way.
