Pickpick

I don‘t want to say too much, this is my pick for round 7 of #lmpbc. Between pick and so-so. It‘s an important story to tell but I felt overwhelmed by it at the same time. I also felt like the writing was a little stiff and journalistic at times but considering the subject material, maybe that was the best way the author knew how to get the message out there without being completely overwhelmed herself. Again, a tough but necessary read overall.

Kaila-ann #nfnov #TIL: I wouldn‘t make it half an hour as a woman in Afghanistan. And my heartbreaks for all of the woman that are denied basic opportunities that it is so easy to take for granted here such as going to school and choosing who to spend my life with. 2d

Finished this one and while I didn‘t learn anything mind blowing or earth shattering, it was nice to read a book about us quiet ones. I kind of expected more about how to thrive as an introvert in a world that prizes extroversion and while there was some of that, it was a lot of science about what makes introverts, well, introverts. Still incredibly fascinating just not EXACTLY what I was picturing. Definitely recommend either way. #nfnov

Hooked_on_books I love this book. I wish I‘d had it when I was in my teens or early 20s—it would have been very validating for me then. 1w
Mandoul I also enjoyed this, but, like you, expected a little more from it. She did write another book focused on introverted kids called Quiet Power, which may have done that. 5d

#TIL numerous studies have found that open office floor plans can have negative results including reduced productivity, impaired memory, higher turnover, sicker staff, hostility, lack of motivation and more aggressive.

Yikes! #nfnov

jb72 I can understand that, but I also think it depends on other factors too. Especially whether you like your coworkers or not. 2w
Kaila-ann @jb72 I‘m sure that does play a factor as well. Still, having absolutely no quiet or privacy has got to be exhausting at times too. 2w
jb72 @Kaila-ann For sure it is. I‘ve worked in a few “open” spaces. Sometimes it feels like you‘re being watched constantly by a supervisor instead of being trusted to do your job. 2w

Clwojick I, 100% can back that. I got along great with most of my coworkers, which was almost more of a distraction 😆 4 pt. 2w
TheAromaofBooks I definitely think it can depend on the size of the workforce as well - I didn't mind when I worked in a small law office with three other paralegals, but in a situation like the one pictured it seems like it would be rather hellish! 2w
Kaila-ann @Clwojick agreed! Sometimes getting along/being friends with your coworkers is almost worse lol. 2w
Kaila-ann @TheAromaofBooks I couldn‘t do it on this scale at all. We have a smaller, open office where I work now. For the most part I don‘t mind but there are days that I wish I had a quiet closet to work in, away from noise and distraction. I just have to put my headphones in and try to focus 🤷🏻‍♀️ 2w

readingjedi PAGES GOAL?!?!? Why the heck have I never thought of that? Makes so much more sense! I've read 5 or 6 mahoosive tomes this year and all the time I was thinking of the time it was taking and how many tiny books I could've read instead. 2020 will be all about the pages! 2w

ImperfectCJ I have so many least favorite movies, it's hard to choose! I agree with @Mandoul that The Happening is awful (so very awful), but I'm not sure I like it less than Love Actually. 2w
REPollock Ditto re Adam Sandler films. 2w
Kaila-ann @readingjedi this year was the first year of page goals vs. book goals and I think it‘s a keeper. It really does make so much sense. I know it‘s fun to see the tracker on GoodReads but it‘s also nice to know that your massive books mean something too 🤷🏻‍♀️. 2w
Kaila-ann Thanks @Mandoul 😊. And @ImperfectCJ I don‘t know that I‘ve even heard of The Happening 😳. I‘ll at least have to google to see what it‘s about. I actually really like Love Actually 🤣🤣 2w
Kaila-ann @KarenUK and @REPollock I‘m not big on Adam Sandler movies myself, he‘s over the top and sort of obnoxious usually. I liked Blended and Just Go With It but honestly, I think the leading ladies did more for those movies 🤷🏻‍♀️. 2w
Amiable I tried to watch “Twilight” to see what the fuss was about. Those were hours of my life I‘ll never get back. 2w
Kaila-ann @Amiable haha yeah! The first movie is the worst of the whole bunch. They‘re all pretty cringeworthy but the first one takes the cake. 2w
DaveGreen7777 5. “Feardotcom” left an impression on me because the premise sounded good on paper, but it was just soooooooo boring! 😴 A bad movie can be salvaged if some parts are so bad they‘re funny, but there is no way to redeem a boring movie! 2w
ImperfectCJ @Kaila-ann Yes, I know I'm in the minority in my opinion about Love Actually. It's probably a sign that I'm a curmudgeon. :-) (There's a hilarious negative review of the movie on Jezebel, if you happen to enjoy expletive-heavy negative reviews of movies you like.) 2w
Kaila-ann @DaveGreen7777 I think I remember when that one came out. My thought was that it was going to be either really good or really bad, sounds like I didn‘t miss much 😬. 2w

Between a pick and so-so for me. It had an interesting idea and intriguing characters but the actual story felt a bit all over the place. Ren is a one handed boy rescued from an orphanage by Benjamin Nab who takes him on “adventures” in New England. Ultimately I stayed because I wanted to find out what happened to Ren and whether or not he found the answers he was looking for - otherwise, the plot felt disjointed and rushed in some places.

I found this topic fascinating and also incredibly hard to imagine. Jennifer is browsing her local library when she finds a book, written about her mother, that will change her life. Adopted at an early age and with sporadic contact with her biological family, it isn‘t until the age of 38 and by random coincidence that she uncovers the fact that she is the granddaughter of Amon Goeth, Nazi commandant of the Plaszow concentration camp in Poland. ⬇️

Kaila-ann Overall I give this book a pick but the formatting was a little weird at first. The story would start in first person with Jennifer talking and then suddenly switch to a third person narration for the more factual elements. It ultimately wasn‘t terribly distracting but it did catch me off guard at first. I finished it on 10/31 so not counting it for non-fiction November. (edited) 3w

ljuliel Beautiful hair to go with his powerful brain. 3w
jb72 Sounds interesting. I‘ve always thought of how well the body can heal itself, and there‘s no reason the brain can‘t do the same. 3w
Kaila-ann @jb72 I find neurology very fascinating. In this same documentary (and I‘m guessing the book by the same name) they explore the concept of autism having to do with the brain being too plastic and able to create too many pathways. Definitely an interesting concept. 3w

jb72 @Kaila-ann That is interesting. We know so little about the brain. I feel like no one really uses the brain to even half their potential. I actually have a neurological disease called Charcot Marie Tooth. It‘s an extra chromosome I believe in our genetics. I also have a few other sensory issues that I‘ve worked hard at ignoring over the years. 3w

What a story. The glitz, the glamour, the loneliness and heartbreak. This is the height of society in 1950‘s New York. The (fictionalized) story of Truman Capote, Babe Paley and the swans of fifth avenue. The very richest, privileged people of that time and also the most broken people as well. A good story and true to the timeline of actual events. I‘ve add more books to my TBR list because of this book filled with fascinating people. #24B4Monday

Mehso-so

Definitely a slow burn, atmospheric read. Set in an insane asylum in 1911, the story follows two inmates, John and Ella as well as one of the physicians, Dr. Fuller. John and Ella fall in love during a time when eugenics was a big topic. The story touched on some dark topics but my so-so rating mostly comes from the ending. I felt it was a bit abrupt and under explained. Not a terrible read by any standards, just a sort of meh one in my eyes.

Listened to this one on audio and really enjoyed it. Part memoir and part medical history, it was a fascinating look into the relatively recent understanding of how the human heart works and what treatments we are able to do. For example, CPR wasn‘t around until the late 1950s even though physicians began attempting open heart surgery in the late 1800s. Lots of interesting facts about cardiology - would definitely recommend. #audiobook #cardiology

My total for #24b4Monday.

Overall, I enjoyed this book as it was a fascinating look into the life of Malala, a 15 year old girl growing up in Pakistan. Her and her father are outspoken supporters of education and especially education of women which makes Malala a target for the Taliban. The only distraction were all of the names constantly being introduced. Otherwise, i felt that i learned about some of the history and the current climate.

I enjoyed this even though romance (and especially contemporary) isn‘t really my first choice anymore. It‘s mostly light & fluffy with enough real-ness to the characters to make it enjoyable. Finished this one #lmpbc #round6 #groupB today and wow, what a story. Heartbreaking, eye-opening and definitely thought provoking. A tale of love, friendship, betrayal, loss and family. I don‘t want to give too much away as it still has one more round but a great pick @suvata

It will be on its way to @Hooked_on_books this week.

DebReads4fun I really enjoyed this book! 2mo

I really enjoyed this one. I felt like I was on the edge of my seat for most of the book and had to force myself not to jump ahead - I wanted to know what was going to happen. My last relationship was not a healthy one so on some levels I could definitely empathize with the main character. Probably a bit over the top for those that read this genre frequently but for me it was a fun, suspenseful ride.

Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks My relationship wasn‘t either... We will find the right one ❤️ 2mo
