Miss Austen Investigates
Miss Austen Investigates: A Novel | Jessica Bull
3 posts | 2 read | 1 to read
A witty, engaging murder mystery featuring Jane Austen as an intrepid amateur sleuth--the first book in a series Jane Austen--sparkling, spirited and incredibly clever--is suddenly thrust into a mystery when a milliner's dead body is found locked inside a cupboard during the middle of a ball. When Jane's brother Georgie is found with some jewellery that belonged to the deceased, the local officials see it as an open-and-shut case, one which is likely to end with Georgie's death. Jane is certain that her brother is innocent, and that there is much more to the murder than meets the eye. Jane's investigations take her on a lively journey through local society as her suspect list keeps growing--and her keen skill for observation will be put to the test in solving this crime and saving her brother.

My red cover book for #ChristmasCrimeChallenge

I went in sceptical, but really enjoyed this. When Jane‘s beloved brother Georgy is suspected of murder, the only way to prove his innocence is to find the real killer. So that‘s what Jane must do! There‘s wit (especially in the letters to her sister), there‘s hotheadedness, there‘s mystery - and (shockingly) our heroine isn‘t perfect, and makes mistakes!

Definitely up for the next in the series.

Ruthiella I‘m glad this turned out a winner! 🎄🔪🎅🏻💀 1mo
JazzFeathers It sounds nice. Only, I'm not very familiar with either Austen and her work. Would it still make sense for me? 1mo
rockpools @JazzFeathers Absolutely - it‘s completely standalone, and doesn‘t assume you know anything. A lot of research has gone into the family, and how she lived - and there are references to the story she‘s writing - but the story would make as much sense if the main character was completely unknown. 1mo

I found this in the book box, on its way home to another library, this evening. So I accidentally borrowed it. Because I need something FUN! And possibly MURDEROUS! (It has been that sort of day, all day. Top tip: never check your work emails at 10pm. You‘re welcome.)

I might use it for Rudolph: a red cover for #ChristmasCrimeChallenge (or is that a stretch too far?)

squirrelbrain Murderous fun is always good - and it‘s red enough for me! 1mo
RaeLovesToRead Would fit red, cosy, and arguably "famous detective" ?? 1mo
Ruthiella It does look fun! And I think @RaeLovesToRead would agree, there‘s NO stretch too far for us to make a book fit! 😂 🎄🔪🎅🏻💀 1mo

Hampshire, 1795 where the Austen family reside at the local rectory, sister Cassandra is engaged to be married, & where Jane is in the midst of a romance with Tom Lefroy. At tonight's dance, Jane is sure that Tom is about to pop the question when their tryst is interrupted by the discovery of a dead body. A young milliner (hatmaker) has been killed, her body hidden in a linen closet. (continued)

OutsmartYourShelf There are plenty of suspects including local bigwig Sir John, but when one of her brothers is accused of having something to do with the crime, Jane finds herself investigating a murder.

I rather enjoyed reading this one. The author weaves together fiction & real people & events from Jane's life into an engaging historical mystery. I thought that the character of Jane was a little too immature here & her noted intelligence didn't really have

OutsmartYourShelf chance to shine - solving the case seemed to be a matter of accusing almost everyone involved one by one rather than actually deducing anything. I enjoyed it enough though that I would be interested in reading another. 3.5🌟

My thanks to #NetGalley & publishers, Penguin Random House/Michael Joseph, for the opportunity to read an ARC.
