Based on the true story of an infamous 1960s experiment, The Dolphin House is a meditation on what makes us truly human.1965: outside a small house on the coast of St. Thomas, four dolphins are circling in a pool. This is where Cora, newly arrived on the island, finds them by accident, as though they've been waiting for her. She won't discover the motives of the scientists working in the house until later, but by then her apparent connection with the animals--aided by her own deafness--has given her every reason to stay. The house is a research facility led by the obsessive Dr. Blum, a man aiming to teach the dolphins' human language. To stave off some of Blum's more insidious experimentations, Cora suggests they build a flooded apartment where she can live and speak with the youngest dolphin around the clock. The radical research forges ahead, but Blum has other ideas and Cora's instincts clash with the male-dominated world of science in the sixties. As a terrible scandal threatens to engulf the experiment, Cora's determination to save the dolphins becomes a battle to save herself.

Historical fiction of a deaf woman who lived with a male dolphin during a research project on the brains of such animals. Also is a sexist time period. No SA, but close calls. Very emotional times through how the scientist works inhumanely on the 4 dolphins. I loved how human language was portrayed to a non-hearer. Very is well explained, with faded letters missed and lip reading.
Glad I read it before the author visits in a few weeks.

Op shopping in Byron Bay was an experience. This 1 was more boutique then second hand shop. Got the black vintage piece, the 2 on the right still had tags on them and everything was reasonably priced which is unusual for op shops nowadays. The family went to a brewery for lunch before hand and there was no wine option believe it or not! So I had one seltzer and left to shop. Afterwards I met my sister and brother in law for a cheeky gin or three.

Soubhiville Oh my gosh I love that black dress! If you ever get tired of it let me know 🙂. You‘ll have to post a photo when you wear it the first time. 1y
LapReader Will do. I‘ll leave it to you in my will. @Soubhiville 1y

AmyG Hope you are doing ok. 2y
TheBookDream @AmyG Pretty good thanks. Positive test was a surprise. I have a lot of chronic stuff (allergies, migraines, etc) that I always suspected a mild case of Covid would hide in well. I was right 🤷‍♀️ 2y
