The Bayou
The Bayou | Arden Powell
7 posts | 4 read | 3 to read
Small-town Louisiana, 1935.When Eugene was twelve, a girl from town disappeared. Everyone said the gators must have got her when she strayed too near the bayou. No foul play, just a terrible accident. But Eugene can't shake the conviction that Mary Beth's death had something to do with the man who used to haunt her--the man no one else could see. Now, nearly two decades later, there are more dangerous things than gators in Chanlarivy. People are disappearing again, and this time, no one can find the bodies. As the town's unease grows, charismatic fugitive Johnny Walker arrives on the scene, shedding bullet casings and stolen bank notes in his wake. He tangles himself up in Eugene's life and awakens memories Eugene thought he had laid to rest years ago. Memories of the mysterious man who followed Eugene into his dreams, and memories of the bayou--and of the horrifying entity that lurks beneath the water's surface, slowly seeping into the town like a stain.

Thank you #GroupQ for another excellent reading memory! This read was perfectly timed for me, apt for hot summer days. Powell‘s writing about the humid Louisiana climate was nearly palpable. While I think this could have been expanded to at least flesh out some characterization, I can appreciate what Powell was trying to do. Lots packed into a small parcel- sex, heat, supernatural horror, sin, vengeance- what a great way to end #LMPBC!

@Bookzombie thanks for picking this, Margie. I thought it was great. The language was exact and I felt held by it. I wanted to have a fan to fan myself with because I kept feeling as if I was put right there in the swamp in the middle of a hot summer. Sorry about the lateness, @psalva It‘ll be on its way to you tomorrow.

psalva No worries! It‘ll give me time to buy a hammock and hire a cabana boy to bring me iced tea and fan me while I read. Sounds like I‘ll need it! 7mo
BookmarkTavern I felt the same about the setting! 7mo
Reggie @psalva @BookmarkTavern I really kinda wanted to say I would give it 4 out of 5 Blanch Devereauxs. It really had that Southern flavor. 7mo
BookmarkTavern LOL That‘s perfect. 7mo

Two authors from #Round20 of #LMPBC !

Arden Powell for some terrifically unnerving horror, and K Ming Chang for creepy and insightful short stories!

I can‘t wait to explore more of each author‘s work, and I‘m super grateful for the members of #GroupQ for introducing me to these authors!

#SundayFunday Have a marvelous day! And don‘t forget to tag me in your responses!

The waters of the bayou are rising. People from town are disappearing. & Eugene finds himself entranced by the Bonnie & Clyde pair that‘s swept into town.

Wow can Powell set a scene! I could feel the heaviness of a Louisiana summer against my skin. & the insidious creeping horror as we don‘t know really know anything that‘s going on. Really reminds me of Alma Katsu‘s historical horror. & I‘m definitely going to look up more by Powell. 🌕🌕🌕🌕🌑

Read in March and failed to take a photo.

This is my choice for #LMPBC Group Q. Overall, this was a pick for me. I really enjoyed the time period and how atmospheric the novel was. I don‘t want to share too many details as I think the less you know the better.

@BookmarkTavern I sent this out to you yesterday.

BookmarkTavern Oh excellent! I can‘t wait to read it! 🖤 9mo
