The Shadow Key: The Brilliant New Novel from the No. 1 Bestselling Author of Pandora | Susan Stokes-Chapman
6 posts | 4 read | 4 to read
There's something mysterious about the village of Penhelyg. Will unlocking its truth bring light or darkness? Meirionydd, 1783. Henry Talbot has been dismissed from his post at a prestigious London hospital. The only job he can find is as a physician in the backwaters of Wales where he can't speak the language, belief in myth and magic is rife, and the villagers treat him with bewildering suspicion. When Henry discovers his predecessor died under mysterious circumstances, he is determined to find answers. Linette Tresilian, the unconventional mistress of Plas Helyg, lives a lonely life. Her father is long dead, her mother haunted by demons which keep her locked away in her room, and her cousin treats her with cool disdain - she has had no choice but to become fiercely self-reliant. Linette has always suspected something is not quite right in the village, but it is only through Henry's investigations that the truth about those closest to her will come to light...a truth that will bind hers and Henry's destinies together in ways neither thought possible. PRAISE FOR SUSAN STOKES-CHAPMAN: 'A gripping narrative in which secrets from the past are slowly and ingeniously revealed' Sunday Times, *Historical Fiction Book of the Month* 'An immersive, evocative story full of romance and intrigue' Red 'Romantic, suspenseful and beautifully written... a glorious treat' Daily Mail

Ok, I love Gothic fiction and this was a definite pick for me until almost the end. Then, the heroine, who was repeatedly described as smart, capable, and practical decided she wants to kill another character, which is fine. But this smart, capable, and practical woman then decides to go confront this person alone, at night, with NO WEAPON. My suspension of disbelief completely shattered. What, she randomly turned into a reckless dumbass?

I received a free arc from a goodreads giveaway. Pub Date: 9/10/24.

Set in Wales, Henry is a disgraced London doctor, relocating to Wales because he can‘t get a job anywhere else. Set in 1783. Henry believes his predecessor was murdered, so he investigates. At the same time, he‘s trying to get the villagers to like him and let him help them but they hate Englishmen. This book was really good and atmospheric.

I‘ll be in Wales in 3 weeks!

Gothic fiction is a favourite genre of mine and this story is an excellent example of such. It has an atmospheric setting which is Wales. Well researched with plenty of mentions of myths, folklore and the odd spot of witchcraft, it‘s written with a good sense of menace. The suspense builds up gradually, rattles along at a fair old pace, culminating in an exciting finale. I was totally gripped by this story and found it a page turner. #Pigeonjole
