It's Not Hysteria
It's Not Hysteria: Everything You Need to Know About Your Reproductive Health (but Were Never Told) | Dr. Karen Tang
5 posts | 6 read | 13 to read
An inclusive and essential new resource for reproductive healthincluding period problems, pelvic pain, menopause, fertility, sexual health, vaginal and urinary conditions, and overall wellbeingfrom leading expert and fierce advocate Dr. Karen Tang Did you know that up to 90% of women experience menstrual abnormalities or pelvic issues in their lifetime? Yet these conditions are overwhelmingly misunderstood, misdiagnosed, or dismissed. The root causes for these issues, such as PCOS, endometriosis, fibroids, ovarian cysts, PMDD, or pelvic floor dysfunction, dont receive the stream of funding for research and new treatments that other conditions do, despite affecting up to half the population. Dr. Karen Tang is on a mission to transform how we engage with our bodies and our healthcare. Its Not Hysteria is a comprehensive guide to common conditions and potential treatment options, with practical tools such as symptom prompts and sample questions for your provider, to equip readers to take control of their gynecologic health. Reproductive healthcare, from abortion to gender-affirming care, is under siege. The onus continues to fall on patients to find and advocate for the care they need. In the face of uncertainty and misinformation, Its Not Hysteria is destined to become a new classic that educates and empowers women and those assigned female at birth.

“This word, hysteria, contains all the judgements and assumptions about female bodies that have existed for thousands of years.” Published in 2024, it‘s a good primer of gynecological health. The book covers basics to more complex concerns. The continued frustration that women‘s health concerns are still not taken seriously by some doctors. Women are still denied bodily autonomy & decisions regarding their gynecological health. Research is still

ncsufoxes vastly underfunded regarding women‘s health. It doesn‘t help that the current administration has severely hampered research for women. The book also discusses the past & current misconceptions & misperceptions of minority women. There is also a nice section about gender vs biological sex (many people don‘t understand the difference of biology vs societal norms). 1mo
AmyG People don‘t know so much of any of this. It‘s just plain sad. 1mo

I wish there were more books like this, as well as more funding for researching regarding the bodies of people with vulvas. This book was informative but also casual, and I liked the inclusive language that was used (something I still struggle with, help). I think if I'd had this book when I was younger, it would have been a huge help and relief. I still appreciate it today though, because there's a lot I still don't know

So, why aren‘t we learning this stuff in school?? It‘s embarrassing how much I did not know, and for that I am glad I read this.

BookmarkTavern I felt the same way when I read this! 3mo
Kristy_K @BookmarkTavern It‘s amazing how much they don‘t teach us. 3mo

I haven‘t had a chance to read everything here but really appreciate Dr Tang‘s inclusive and clear approach. The third section tackles treatments including birth control and abortion. And hope her message spreads as far and wide as possible: it‘s NOT hysteria!

BookmarkTavern I absolutely adored this book even as it made me so mad. 😅 10mo
Smrloomis @BookmarkTavern I think that‘s about right! I was happy to read what I did of it and also so angry that this is STILL what people are struggling with! 10mo

A thorough explanation of everything you never knew you needed to know about gynecological health.

Wow! There‘s a part of me that‘s embarrassed about everything I didn‘t know in this book, but more of me is angry. For most of my life I thought debilitating pain & long heavy periods was all normal. It was nearly 20 years with a period before a doctor took me seriously.

I should have known better. I should have been taught better. 🌕🌕🌕🌕🌕

mrsmarch The onus should not be on the patient to have more medical knowledge than the doctor and convince the doctors something is wrong. Shame on your doctors who for twenty years did not educate you about your body or take your pain seriously. I have friends who are doctors who get mad at my doctors for not telling me stuff and putting the shame of medical onus on me. 1y
PuddleJumper Glad there are more books coming out that are talking about things like this. It's not just lack of knowledge but also medical bias. I work a lot with clients with endo and most of them don't get diagnosed for years and usually only when surgical intervention is needed 1y
willaful @PuddleJumper I never did get any help, except that one doctor put me on codeine for the pain. Was saved only by pregnancy and then menopause. Not that it was definitely endo -- who the hell knows? -- but it was *something* 🤬 1y
