Getting started on the last catch-up #lmpbc #round6 #groupJ selection! The cover reminds me of aerial photos of Las Vegas, where I spent my teenage years: civilization right up to the edge of the desert. A LOT of people on my GoodReads network have read or are planning to read this book.

Tamra Wow, look at all the pools! 23h
julesG This looks weird somehow. Like a screenshot from one of those computer games where you build your town one grid square at a time. 22h
BarbaraBB Great pic! I just read a book about a different part of Las Vegas. Loved it. 20h

Kids in my neighborhood trick or treating tonight

Cortg OMG! We‘re under a tornado warning but it didn‘t stop Dorothy from trick-or-treating at my house. She informed me she had Toto in her basket 😂 3w
mrsmarch @Cortg How appropriate! Somewhere out in the gloom are my children. I just watched two groups of kids visit the house in either side of me and walk right past my house, what the heck. 3w
Cortg I hope your kiddos are having fun! One of mine dressed as Forrest Gump and went to his girl friend‘s to hand out candy. The other took a nap in her Lydia (from Beetlejuice the musical, NOT the movie.) I miss them trick-or-treating! 3w
See All 7 Comments
ValerieAndBooks @Cortg are you near Philly? we actually had a tornado touch down three miles from us late last night 😱 — although there was damage, it wasn‘t widespread fortunately. @mrsmarch our neighborhood doesn‘t get trick or treaters but I always buy a small bag of candy “just in case” 😂 3w
mrsmarch @ValerieAndBooks My in laws live in Montgomery Co PA — where was this tornado?! 🌪 3w
ValerieAndBooks Small world!! It was in Thornbury Twp, Delaware Co (I‘m in Thornbury Twp, Chester Co). 3w
Cortg @ValerieAndBooks I‘m in Maryland @ 2 hrs from Philly. We had tornado warnings and a nasty storm that start @ 10:30 but no tornado. A friend had a tree large limb go through her roof, but it was beautiful and warm for the trick-or-treaters in the early evening, just a bit windy. 3w

ValerieAndBooks Re: genealogy— I turned over my DAR app to my registrar mid-September and hoping for approval soon 🤞 (my grandmother was DAR so hope that‘ll make it a bit faster). It won‘t be member 1000000 but close enough 😂 3w
mrsmarch @ValerieAndBooks It doesn‘t get looked at any faster when you have a relative to go in on, but I checked the Pending Member Report for a new member I just sent in, and they‘re reviewing applications that arrived in DC the week of 9/23 — so they are breezing right along! I‘m sure everything will be great. 👍🏻 3w
ValerieAndBooks Good to know. True, it‘s not expedited if there‘s already a DAR relative but hope it means less things they have to check off 🤞. My registrar said they were really backlogged this summer, so we‘ll see 😊. Feel free to email me at valphia at aol.com if you want to compare notes. There we go! I had to look up the highest elevation I‘d ever been. I knew I‘d been to Denver, and that I stopped in Vail for a bathroom break once, so I had to figure out where I crossed the Great Divide. The highest elevation on I-70 in Colorado is the Eisenhower Tunnel and I drove it at 18 in my dad‘s 1997 Ford Ranger (red) full of college things and towing a Uhaul trailer.

AmyG Ah, then that‘s my highest spot , too. 👍🏻 (edited) 1mo

mrsmarch @ashley_o13 My 6 year old took the Pottermore sorting hat quiz and it put her in Ravenclaw, which makes sense if you think of her as a Luna Lovegood type Ravenclaw 🦅 💙🧡. I don‘t know where the baby will sort to, but I am beginning to suspect Slytherin. 🐍 💚🖤 3mo
ashley_o13 @mrsmarch that's so cute she looks like a ravenclaw lol and I'm guessing the little one has a little evil side ? And I thought my 9 year old was too young to do the Pottermore sorting hat quiz I'm going to have him take it! 3mo
mrsmarch @ashley_o13 I walked River through the quiz when she was 4 because I couldn‘t wait another second. And her patronus was specifically a stray cat, which again, if you knew her IRL, is totally accurate. Cleo is adorably evil, but she has the classic Slytherin strive-for-greatness drive. If she isn‘t Slytherin, she‘s a Gryffindor, because she‘s 💯 a long-lost Weasley. 3mo
ashley_o13 @mrsmarch aw! That's so cute! I'm definitely having Brayden do it tomorrow! I feel like he could definitely be Slytherin or Ravenclaw his personality is so in between them. When he takes it I'll let you know what he gets ! 3mo

ValerieAndBooks That looks so good 🤤! 5mo
MicheleinPhilly Probably a wise decision. I made his jerk sauce once and in addition to it being insanely spicy, I didn‘t wear gloves when I sliced the MANY scotch bonnets the recipe called for. For about a week any time I touched my face it was like ☄️☄️☄️☄️. 5mo
mrsmarch @MicheleinPhilly @ValerieAndBooks Update, I tried one of the cucumber slices, quite piquant between the jalapeños and the rum alcohol because you don‘t cook the alcohol off per the recipe, but not too strong. Hey #lmpbc #round6 #groupJ...some books I was thinking of for our swap. They‘re all under 300 pages, by women authors, two fiction and two nonfiction. I haven‘t read any of them before but they‘re all on my to-read! What do you think?

See All 14 Comments
Sward7 I‘m so excited to be a part of the group. I‘m on the road today but will spend time looking at these and proposing my options tomorrow. Thanks for getting us started. 5mo
Fridameetslucy Me too - excited because I love writing in my books. Super good choices mismarch! Gingerbread is in my to read list already. I like the sound of murder in matera also. Let me think about others after the weekend. I have an unveiling to go to for a friends 20 year old daughter - hard sad weekend 5mo
Sward7 So far I‘m liking Murder in Matera 5mo
Sward7 So, I'm lame and don't know how to properly post. I need my daughter to teach me how to do a pic collage - but until she's home, I will have to post my recommendations here and see if one of you can help me out: The Huntress, The Thirteenth Tale, Thorn Birds, or Shell Seekers. These are the books I'd like to read and share - 2 contemporary fiction and two classics. I'm happy with any of the four.
5mo
Lidia @mrsmarch I think I would like to read Murder in Matera ☺️ 5mo
mrsmarch @Sward7 Wow! Those are all so long. 😰 I have to keep in mind that I‘m taking a class this summer and don‘t have a ton of free time. 5mo
Sward7 Huntress (560 pages), The Thirteenth Tale (432 pages), Thornbirds (704 pages), Shell Seekers (656 pages). Yes, these are all novels with depth. With it being summer, I didn't realize we had a page limit. As a group do we want to establish different rules? What does everyone think?
5mo
Sward7 @mrsmarch @Fridameetslucy @Lidia do we want to limit books to less than 300 pages? 5mo
Lidia I would like to keep it in the 300 pages limit. I work long hours and I‘m not sure I can commit to finishing longer books. 5mo
mrsmarch @Lidia @Sward7 @Fridameetslucy I‘d prefer keeping this book to one that‘s under 300 pages in hardcover — so under 325 or so in paperback (because of size, pbs are sometimes a smidge longer). 5mo

mrsmarch @Tamra I have a friend whose father was an Ethiopian immigrant, and she loves spicy food — if it is so spicy she cries she‘s at her happiest. And even SHE was flabbergasted at, like, the recipe for rum-pickled scotch bonnet peppers. I took a picture of the recipe calling for 6 of the peppers with caption “Marcus is out to kill us” and she responded “😳”. I could definitely rum-pickle some other veggie, though... 5mo
Tamra @mrsmarch my children are Ethiopian hence my discovery of the cuisine. I adore spicy and that rush of endorphins is exhilarating, but no thanks to the Scotch Bonnets! 😅😂😜 (edited) 5mo

I can‘t let go of this book. I‘m rationalizing it to myself as the effect that adoption has on genealogical situations, and therefore it is pertinent to my studies. But it‘s also reinforcing to me that it has always been about policing women‘s bodies, and that if anyone tells my daughters what to do with their respective uteruses, I will fillet them alive.
