August‘s book has swept the bracket thus far! Once Upon a River was a contender, and I‘m amused that they‘re both books I immediately recommended to a friend and they both fall in to “magical realism”.

1. If I‘m just taking a brain break, cozy mysteries are life.
2. I reread Little Women annually, but when I was hospitalized last year I had my husband bring me the first 3 books of The Belgariad (first one is tagged).
3. Pawn of Prophecy, Little Women/Little Men. Otherwise I‘m not much of a rereader, because there‘s so much on my TBR! The “Bibliophile Murders” by Kate Carlisle is a comfort series.

Thank you @MoonWitch94 for the tag!

Cemeteries, cemeteries, cemeteries! How I adore them! Next month I‘m even giving a lesson to my DAR chapter on how to clean headstones properly. Also pictured are the signature of my witch ancestor Welthian Richards, the memorial stone for my Great-Aunt Sarah, and the court papers accusing my ancestor Esther Elwell of witchcraft. #basicwitchswap #cemeteries

#BasicWitchSwap aesthetic. I am 💯 a hearth or kitchen witch — all cozy, fires, blankets, tea/coffee, & familiars. The image in the middle is a depiction of Nehallenna, a Dutch Germanic goddess who predates the Romans, whose emblems are 🍎, 🥖, 🐟, & a 🐕 companion. She is only found in the exact coastal area where my maternal grandfather‘s family originated. Pictured also my current familiar, Bunny. And cemeteries — oh, my beloved cemeteries.

I'm bailing on this book for now. I didn't realize til today that I had just started it when my best friend's husband became ill and passed away. I'll give it another go later on.

June and July were pretty much trash for books. June‘s pick is the latest in a series of serial novels I consider literary comfort food. Star Mother was a good read, but not blockbuster. I would recommend it. I hope August is better. #readingbracket

I had an absolutely wretched July. I came home from DC & was *womp womp* sick w covid. Then I wrenched my hip & was laid up for a few days. I‘m busy & stressed off my heid cleaning house bc my husband has a thorn in his paw abt something or other. I‘ve been reading, but I didn‘t have the bandwidth for July #bookspin choices. I‘ve tried to stack August with books I KNOW I‘ll want to read.

TheAromaofBooks Sorry July went off the rails!!! Hopefully things will calm down in August. ❤ 2mo

Reading this book in the midst of all the kerfuffle around the potential repeal of Roe was like a knife in the heart. And it‘s a book for tweens! And it was heartbreaking to realize that nothing has changed at all! The other book that I had a hard time choosing between was Stamped (For Kids) — a version of Ibram X. Kendi‘s book geared toward 4th graders so my kid will be ready for it soon.

Once Upon a River | Diane Setterfield
post image

This was tough. First, I had to pick a book for the month. The Taking of Jemima Boone or Louisa May Alcott‘s Hospital Sketches were also amazing, recommendable reads. I went with a book that was amazing and also accessible, being a YA book. But then I had to choose between Straight on Til Morning and Empire of Pain. EoP was a slog but an accessible slog, and an important slog. I‘ve talked about it SO MUCH since reading it. But I know it would👇🏻

mrsmarch 👉🏻be hard to recommend a book that dense to absolutely everyone. Once Upon A River is a book I could recommend to everyone. I actually gave my copy to another mom at school when I finished reading it. 5mo

Empire of Pain is a slog. But it‘s a very well written slog and it contains a lot of important information about how the Sackler family has done business and how their business decisions and philanthropy are entwined. It is personably written, not dry.

April #bookspin … includes this gorgeous purple memoir by GBBO winner Nadiya Hussain that just came in to my hands today as a birthday gift. I‘m slogging through Empire of Pain at the moment (it‘s great but dense) and might reward myself with an easy read off this board when I‘m done (Hanging Tree comes to mind).

Big comfy chair/chaise longue/bed and a bowl of peanut M&Ms, preferably. A blanket and/or a warm drink is optional but nice. 80% done with the tagged ebook for #bookspin. (Hun-Kamé would suggest a cup of hot chocolate, I‘m sure.)

Patchshank Im always cold so I think a cozy blanket is my only must. 7mo
Kimzey Comfy place to sit, good lighting and some type of drink. Cat in lap is a bonus! 🛋 💡 ☕️ 🐈‍⬛ 7mo
TheAromaofBooks Jade & Shadow was one of those books that I wanted to love more than I actually did haha I'll be interested to hear your thoughts!! 7mo
mrsmarch @TheAromaofBooks I really liked it! It‘s different from Mexican Gothic in that MG is a fever dream and J&S is a cultural set piece with an epic structure — mortals and gods, and a duel. MG is lush and J&S is sparse, but that suits each story. 7mo
TheAromaofBooks Nice!!! I haven't read Mexican Gothic... Jade & Shadow is the only book I've read by this author. I did enjoy it, although it really could have used a map! 😂 7mo

Life‘s too short to stick with a book that leaves me feeling lukewarm! Had to bail on The Third Witch because it didn‘t capture my imagination within the first ten chapters. King‘s Mountain — decent
Trials of Phillis Wheatley — eh, decent

The character is talking abt his ancestral home of Navarre & the Pyrenées, but with a couple edits he expresses a thought I‘ve had: Can our “blood” remember ancient landscapes, & we feel comfortable in a deja vu way in some places bc of this historical connection between our ancestors & topography? My ancestors‘ migration pattern stays almost totally in the ancient mountains that stretch from western Scandinavia to Scotland to West Virginia.

shanaqui I know I've felt “hiraeth“ for Wales my entire life, though I was born in England. I'm always happier and healthier in Wales, too. So for sure some people connect with a place that “feels“ like home, no matter what the reason is.

My parents settled in Yorkshire, which has very very similar weather patterns to home!
8mo
mrsmarch @shanaqui my mother says she doesn‘t like the cold, or the mountains, but that she finds herself at peace in foggy, rocky, natural places, so she and my dad retired to a hillside in New Hampshire which is at the northern end of the Appalachians 🤷🏼‍♀️ She can‘t actually leave the mountains, she just found a different part of the same mountain range to live in. 8mo
