The Heather Blazing
The Heather Blazing: A Novel | Colm Toibin
7 posts | 7 read | 10 to read
Colm Tibns second lovely, understated novel that proceeds with stately grace (The Washington Post Book World) about an uncompromising judge whose principles, when brought home to his own family, are tragic. Eamon Redmond is a judge in Irelands high court, a completely legal creature who is just beginning to discover how painfully unconnected he is from other human beings. With effortless fluency, Colm Tibn reconstructs the history of Eamons relationshipswith his father, his first girl, his wife, and the children who barely know himand he writes about Eamons affection for the Irish coast with such painterly skill that the land itself becomes a character. The result is a novel of stunning power, seductive and absorbing (USA Today).

Toibin is a masterful writer. This is his second novel, published in 1992. It was quiet and beautiful and about very little. The perfect novel to start my holiday.

Bklover Sounds lovely! 2y
Rissreads I haven‘t read any of his books. I must have some on my shelf surely? Have you read any others or can recommend any? 2y
Rissreads You always go to the best holiday destinations! ♥️ 2y
MrsMalaprop @Rissreads He has written so many and I‘ve read 3 or 4. I don‘t think you can go wrong with him. Maybe Brooklyn is a good place to start? 2y

I do love his writing so. Nothing much happens (I seem to enjoy this in a book) but the jumping between young Eamon and grown up Eamon works so well. I think I might go hunt out more books.

I watched him interview Marilynne Robinson the other week, I understood none of what they talked about but it did remind me that I loved Brooklyn so purchased this second hand.

I picked up two books from my local second hand bookshop today. Both authors Bernhard Schlink and Colm Toibin I know, but I have not heard of the books. The one by Bernard Schlink is set in Sydney. This is also my latest sewing project on the go again now that the days are cooling down ❄️😍

Crazeedi Beautiful! 6y
Freespirit Thanks @Crazeedi I've been working on it since last year but put it aside over summer. 6y

Freespirit Thanks @BooknerdsLife this quilt is by Jen Kingwell. She is a very well known Australian quilter, and I did it as a block of the month. Her work is amazing. Nice to do at my own pace also. I also have books to read😂😂 6y
Freespirit @Crazeedi I love making things. I used to do a lot of sewing when my children were young. Now I make 1-2 quilts a year. It's a lovely hobby. I have made some great friends through it also. When I retire I will do more...I hope😊 6y
Crazeedi @Freespirit just very cool, do you stitch pieces by hand or machine? 6y
Freespirit Mostly hand piecing...some machine and then I always hand quilt. I find it relaxing @Crazeedi 6y

I enjoyed this one very much. Toibin writes so honest, his personages are so real. Nothing much happens, it is just those people and the way they think and act. Not too nice, not too perfect, just very very human.
This is the story of an Irish judge, a very introvert man, who doesn't really realize he needs other people until it is too late. Or almost. #1001books Read it on the day of the British Brexit referendum.
