Historical Suspense Novel The year is 1876. Living on the desolate English moors since she was twelve, Abigail Benson feels she is no match for Clinton McLean, the suave but callous man she has to marry in order to get back to the states after the brutal murder of her father. The odd union between them is temporary - until she finds her relatives and until his uncle's unusual will is finalized. Back in her home town of Richmond, Virginia, the south is in turmoil, threatening to start the Civil War anew and break up the Union because of the North's harsh treatment and the disputed election between Hayes and Tilden. This is a turmoil Abby's temporary husband and his business partner are embroiled in. Some mystery follows Abby's return to the states, one she thought she'd left behind in England, one that has her jumping at shadows and running from an unseen menace. A mystery that has its roots in the past and in the Civil War itself. Slowly she learns the truth, a truth that puts her in extreme danger.

Bailedbailed

I‘m done. I just don‘t think this one is for me. At least it isn‘t for me right now. It‘s got the bones of a good novel, but a good editor would help. It‘s 303 pages. I made it to page 177 and I was still waiting for the “suspense” it was billed as. We had a murder on page 7 and even after 170 pages there had been absolutely no clues or hints about why it occurred. I‘m very disappointed. This had some promise.

CaramelLunacy That sounds disappointing 6mo
Sace @CaramelLunacy So disappointing. Maybe I‘ll try it again one day. 6mo

I‘m happy that self publishing is easier. Really. However, I wish this typo had been caught.

I am liking this book despite typos and some bits that could use a little polish.

“A biting wind swept the moors, carrying winter in its teeth.”

All other reading is on hold until I finish this one. I‘m in a year-long round robin book club and I don‘t want to be the weak link in the mailing order!
