Mysteries of Udolpho | Ann Ward Radcliffe
176 posts | 77 read | 5 reading | 120 to read
A best-seller in its day and a potent influence on Sade, Poe, and other purveyors of eighteenth and nineteenth-century Gothic horror, The Mysteries of Udolpho remains one of the most important works in the history of European fiction. After Emily St. Aubuert is imprisoned by her evil guardian, Count Montoni, in his gloomy medieval fortress in the Appenines, terror becomes the order of the day. With its dream-like plot and hallucinatory rendering of its characters' psychological states, The Mysteries of Udolpho is a fascinating challenge to contemporary readers. About the Series: For over 100 years Oxford World's Classics has made available the broadest spectrum of literature from around the globe. Each affordable volume reflects Oxford's commitment to scholarship, providing the most accurate text plus a wealth of other valuable features, including expert introductions by leading authorities, voluminous notes to clarify the text, up-to-date bibliographies for further study, and much more.

Once I got over just how long this novel was, I was on a roll. The heroine certainly got her money's worth out of adventure.

I also got this fabulous mug decorated with books by female writers (I already have the other bookish mug they do!) from Santa 💖

I've only read 4 of the books, but I own a few more waiting to be read and I've found some new additions to the TBR too...

How many have you read? Are there any you'd particularly recommend?

Now to make myself a mug of tea 😁

erinreads My mom got me this mug for Christmas! 2y
RaeLovesToRead @erinreads It's awesome, right? 😊😁 How many of the books have you read? Do you have a favourite? I've already downloaded a couple of interesting looking ones on Kindle! 2y
erinreads I‘ve only read 5. Jane Eyre was my favorite! 2y

RaeLovesToRead @erinreads I love Jane Eyre too! ♥ 2y
Vansa I can't recommend North and South by Elizabeth Gaskell enough. Its an excellent, thought provoking book that explores the Industrial Revolution, the rights of workers, and is still extremely relevant, and also manages to have an absolutely swoony romance. One of my favourite books, also a spectacular tv show.Im also a huge fan of Katherine Mansfield razor-sharp insights. 2y
RaeLovesToRead @Vansa Thanks! I have a copy of North and South in my cupboard and now I really want to read it! Will check out Katherine Mansfield too... 😊😁 2y

Some lovely poetry and descriptions of nature (though excessive, perhaps). I did get a little weary of Emily becoming ‘insensible‘ (apparently the 18th century equivalent to swooning 😂).

I loved this so much more than I thought I would. Little drawn out at times but overall compelling writing, enchanting plot and delightful characters. 5 ⭐️

@mklong how you doing?

BarbaraBB Great review! 3y
mklong I‘m still loving it too! I finally have time to relax after a very busy holiday and should finish in the next couple of days. 3y
mklong And I keep forgetting to mention how much I love the annotations in the Oxford World‘s Classic edition! I love that they show both the travelogues that inspired Radcliffe and the literature and art that was inspired by her. 3y

In to volume III and the gothic has intensified, with menacing, ominous, and sinister characters The wonderful Annette thrown in for comic relief. MC is getting gutsy and feisty by the minute, oh where will it all lead? Channeling Catherine Moreland right now!!!

Cuilin @Milara yes, I was surprised by the poetic prose. 3y

@mklong so this arrived in time for volume two!! Im still enjoying it, how about you? The poetry quotes though are sending me down rabbit holes. Howbeit the MC can be frustrating, the writing is flawless.

mklong We are reading the same edition now! The Kindle version I had from the library wasn‘t annotated and it was driving me nuts. I am loving it so far! There is perhaps a bit too much dramatic fainting, but I am otherwise impressed by how subtle and poetic the writing is 3y
mklong I was really moved reading about Emily‘s grief. It was beautifully written and her emotions were incredibly familiar. It‘s amazing to connect so well with a character who was created more than 200 years ago. 3y

Cuilin @mklong oh dear. Guess I‘ll order the rest. How many chapters in total? 3y
mklong My edition is broken up into 4 volumes that each have like 10-15 chapters 3y
Cuilin @mklong got it! Thanks. I‘ve read two pages. So far it‘s good. I‘m surprised by the quality of the writing. Very poetic. 3y
batsy Hope you enjoy it! And yes, it's a chunkster in 4 volumes. I too was taken aback with the prose style; it's poetic and captivating (even if the novel itself has its highs and lows). 3y

I can't sum this up. Its energy is bonkers & I respect it. Had it been shorter I might have loved it. Radcliffe was doing all kinds of wild stuff stylistically; combining the sublime with the ludicrous. Some of it was enchanting & gripping. Some of it made me want to nap. It's the fact that we're living in 2020 & I've no attention span to speak of. But that's not Radcliffe's fault! She was writing for people like Henry Tilney & Catherine Morland.

batsy I gave it 3 stars but it would have been higher if it was a tighter, more coherent novel. Also, some of the "big reveals" here might make people want to throw the book, but I honestly cackled out loud! I kind of loved that shit was just over the top NUTS. On a deeper level, it made me think about what would have gripped readers in the 18th-century: xenophobia, gender relations, women as property, & the real, underlying fears of social relations. 3y
batsy Shoutout to @sprainedbrain whose review of this years ago alluding to its "Scooby-Doo ending" was what really piqued my interest ? If you think about it, you can't have romanticism, Gothic, & the sublime without the hijinks & shenanigans! Even if some parts were tedious & overwrought, I was always happy to re-enter this world each day & linger in its weird, beguiling space. It's so fun seeing how Austen spoofs this genre in Northanger Abbey. 3y
sprainedbrain This is the best review of this book I‘ve seen! When I grow up, I want to be able to write reviews like you. Also, ❤️ she was writing for Henry Tilneys and Catherine Morlands! 😂 3y

Smarkies Hahahha. My interest was piqued because of Northanger Abbey. But I find that I too have the attention span of a goldfish nowadays so may have to give this a miss and focus on other books 😞. 3y

batsy @Centique Hahaha. I totally understand not having patience for that at 18! I would have been the same. (And I think I didn't quite get on with Northanger Abbey at that age because Catherine's naivete and runaway imagination hit quite close to home 😂) 3y

This trillion-page book is a *lot*, but it's also fun & excessive & enjoyable (+ occasionally boring & frustrating, yes ?)

There was a nice moment where, Ludovico, part of the domestic help, settles down to read on a cold & stormy night. This quote appears, as I read this book & am myself "fascinated by inventions, which had captivated the careless imagination in every rank of society, in a former age". Very meta of Ann Radcliffe.

#dealalert

jenniferw88 I'd like to warn (or remind!) #PemberLittens that it is a #chunkster! If you still want to read a Radcliffe but put off by the size, I'd suggest the tagged one. It's her first popular novel and so she's only just getting into her stride, but still good. Her best is The Italian but wasn't as much of an influence on Jane as my timeline post on the GR group shows - find the pub dates of Mysteries & Northanger to see why Mysteries did! 4y
jenniferw88 Ok, just checked my timeline post and pub date of The Italian (1797 & beware this is also quite long!) so it could have influenced Northanger but not as much as Mysteries of Udolpho did. Timeline post here: https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/21338633-timeline 4y

So happy to hear The End. Been listening to off & on since my Austen in August reread of Northanger Abbey. Thought I should have a frame of reference to what Jane Austen was poking fun at. I could only take so much of the Histrionics & would bail for awhile. Apparently no Editors in 1794 when this was published. It rambles on and on. Finally I can get this 31 h 15 m 42 s mess off my phone. 🙄

Been on the to-read list for like 20 years.

This one has like 3.38 on Librarything, which seems to stem in part from a dislike of weepy virtuous-type characters again. Idk, I kinda prefer them. Emily tries hard to be a decent human being and stick to her principles. She isn't weak.

Librivox audiobooks are free, but this is my worst experience with one. Some of the readers mispronounce words or have background noise.

Settings Realizing the low rating might be because one member gave it 1 star multiple times. 5y
Lcsmcat @Settings That shouldn‘t happen. I don‘t understand what a reviewer gains from deliberately trying to lower the rating. Did they have a book out titled “Why the Mysteries of Udolpho Sucks” and need to drum up readership? It just seems juvenile. (edited) 5y
Liz_M For me it was the fainting. And the amateur poetry, had to knock a star off for the poetry 😁 5y
sprainedbrain I listened to a really good version read by Karen Cass. I found it on Scribd. ❤️ 5y
Settings @Liz_M Yeah lol. Sometimes I'd forget there were literary quotes at the beginning of each chapter and I'd be like "what is this vastly improved writing?". Still liked it though. :P 5y

I probably never would have finished this book if it wasn‘t for the excellent audiobook.

Holy buckets, Ms. Radcliffe could go on! And clearly this book wasn‘t edited in the least. It‘s long, y‘all. It gets convoluted and outlandish, but somehow it was still never boring. 🤔 The Scooby-Doo wrap-up ending was almost too much, but I loved the gothic, creepy castle vibes and the love story. Just call me Catherine Morland. 😂

For #PrinceOfJuly #letsgocrazy I immediately thought of this book - in true gothic style, the main character is unsure if she is going crazy, or being driven to desperation by her supposed caretakers, or if something more sinister is occurring. I didn‘t like this one quite as much as I have others in the genre, but it was still pretty creepy, like this old picture of my cat in our previous apartment! @Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks @vkois88

I recommend SO much! I was intimidated because it was so long and from the eighteenth century, I was sure it would be difficult to read, but it turned out to be the most exciting book I‘ve read in ages. It was a genuine page turner and I totally forgot how old it was most of the time.

Yes the heroine was old fashioned - very gentle and lots of fainting - but still believable, brave and stood up for what she believed in. Pleasantly surprised.

Emilymdxn Hiding this in comments cause spoilers - the fact that the heroine would send the love of her life away because of how he‘d been acting, and maintain her standards and self belief even though she was devastated without him, and take him back on her terms only when he proved he could make her happy, was something I very rarely see in books this old. Their love story was so emotional and really got me in the heart 💓 6y

One of the classic Gothic romances, mentioned by Austen in Northanger Abbey.

This book felt never ending. Reading it reminded me of watching long-running soap operas: recycled plots, change of locales (because only so much can happen in Pine Valley... erm... one place), long lost characters coming back. Just yesterday I told my wife that all that was missing were pirates and lo and behold, today we have pirates! In short, this book has the gothic equivalent of everything but the kitchen sink.

I am so behind on this book!

JillPill How're you liking it? It sounds really interesting 6y
PurpleyPumpkin I‘m so behind on it too! But I‘m determined to finish it... at some point this year. 😜 6y
WanderingBookaneer @JillPill : I‘m not a huge fan of the melodrama in gothic fiction, but it hasn‘t been too bad. 6y

WanderingBookaneer @PurpleyPumpkin : I‘m reading it for #AroundTheYearIn52Books . The new week starts tomorrow. I want to finish it today, but I‘ll be ok if I finish it tomorrow or Tuesday. 6y
PurpleyPumpkin Ah, yes, it‘s a good gothic novel pick. I started reading it for #udolphoread, but wasn‘t able to get through it. That was a few months ago. 😬 6y
dgingo Let us know what you think. I was assigned to read it in grad school, but I never finished it—our professor introduced it by saying, “it‘s really long and slow, and not that engaging, and not really that good, but it‘s important, so read it by next week.” 🙄#NotAllProfessorsAreGoodProfessors 6y

I picked this one up because I needed to read a #GothicNovel for #AroundTheYearIn52Books and I knew it had been influential to Austen when writing Northanger Abbey. As this was all I knew of the novel I decided to Google its plot and found this character description in Wikipedia. The last line is priceless.

Progress Update: Good golly! How come no one told me this was an almost 600 page book?!?! 🤣I obviously did not pay attention when I got it from Serial Reader and thought it was shorter. 80 issues read and still 46 issues to go, so it won't be finished until next year. I don't know if I would have stuck with it except in a chapter a day format, but I'm actually enjoying it in all its gothic-ness. 👍📚

TommieMarie74 Do you like Serial Reader? I was thinking of trying it out. 6y
Leniverse Haha, yes that's a 600 page book that feels like 800. So many twists and turns, it just goes on and on. 😂 But it is oddly enjoyable. 6y
StaceyKondla @TommieMarie74 - I just started using Serial Reader and I like it. It's kind of fun reading classics in bite sized pieces and knowing exactly how many days it will take you to finish. I actually think it helps me read more because it's a great use of 10minutes here and there. 6y

DebinHawaii @TommieMarie74 Yes! What @StaceyKondla said! I have read six serials of varying sizes plus this one and I love it. Each issue is about 10-12 minutes of reading a day and it encourages you with messages & badges that make it fun. It is great for getting to the classics you want to read but keep putting off. 👍👍📚 6y
DebinHawaii @Leniverse I like that! "Oddly enjoyable" is a great way to describe it! ??? 6y
CatLass007 I think Serial Reader is terrific! It‘s a great way to read the classics. 6y
TommieMarie74 @StaceyKondla @DebinHawaii @CatLass007 Thanks!! Sometimes it‘s hard to get those classics in. They aren‘t always as easy to devour as newer books. think I‘ll give it a shot! 😊❤️📚 6y

Pickpick

I plowed through the last 80 pages of this yesterday! I found it to be quite different from many female-authored and female-heroine books of that time (written late 18th century, admittedly my read list is not long for then). The women in this book do have some agency--and sure sometimes it leads to bad choices--but it is refreshing nonetheless. #udolphoread #1001books

Liz_M Fascinating, I have no memory of the main character's agency, but do remember her fainting a lot. 6y
DreesReads @Liz_M she refused to marry two different men, despite the efforts of those around her. She snuck around a lot to try to learn more, and was instrumental in getting the prisoner freed. Her aunt also used what power she had to preserve her properties for Emily. And yes lots of swooning and tiring poetry. 6y
