Mysteries of Udolpho
Mysteries of Udolpho | Ann Ward Radcliffe
241 posts | 89 read | 8 reading | 120 to read
A best-seller in its day and a potent influence on Sade, Poe, and other purveyors of eighteenth and nineteenth-century Gothic horror, The Mysteries of Udolpho remains one of the most important works in the history of European fiction. After Emily St. Aubuert is imprisoned by her evil guardian, Count Montoni, in his gloomy medieval fortress in the Appenines, terror becomes the order of the day. With its dream-like plot and hallucinatory rendering of its characters' psychological states, The Mysteries of Udolpho is a fascinating challenge to contemporary readers. About the Series: For over 100 years Oxford World's Classics has made available the broadest spectrum of literature from around the globe. Each affordable volume reflects Oxford's commitment to scholarship, providing the most accurate text plus a wealth of other valuable features, including expert introductions by leading authorities, voluminous notes to clarify the text, up-to-date bibliographies for further study, and much more.

Pickpick

Maybe an unpopular opinion, but I low-key enjoyed this one 😂 It was objectively terrible, with a plot that went nowhere, absolutely no sense of suspense or pacing, and wildly unlikely twists. Yet despite her tendency to burst into tears and/or faint in basically every chapter, I found myself liking Emily. I appreciated her commitment to what she believed was right and her determination to follow her morals even when they weren't the easy path. ⬇

TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) This is also a book I've seen referenced so many other places, and it was fun and interesting to read it for myself and see how it's influenced other writers and books. I don't see myself rereading this one, but it was an entertaining one-time read, especially thanks to the team moaning and groaning of the #HashtagBrigade @BarkingMadRead 😂

BarkingMadRead 🤣🤣🤣 so so bad but maybe a little good? I‘m still conflicted 🤣 1d
Librarybelle I‘m behind on this one, but I‘m not minding it, so I share in your unpopular opinion! It‘s my second read through…I oddly enjoy these over-the-top classics. 🤷🏻‍♀️ 1d

TheAromaofBooks @BarkingMadRead @Librarybelle - Once I just started leaning into the absolute absurdity of it, I liked it much better. I don't think Radcliffe intended to make me snort-laugh as often as she did 😂 😂 😂 1d
BarkingMadRead Probably not 🤣🤣🤣 1d
AnishaInkspill When i finished reading this last year, in places it was torture but by the end I couldn't beleive I was thinking of reading this again 😂 there's just something about it 😂 24h
Lcsmcat I‘m with you. I read it years ago, because of Jane Austen, and just decided to go along for the ride rather than take it seriously. 23h
Daisey I recently went back and looked at some of my own posts from reading this and realized I had much the same experience reading it, but I still have no desire to reread it yet. 23h

mcctrish Todays chapter could have been the whole book #justsaying 6d
eeclayton At least now we know what was behind the veil. Even if it was a very WTF kinda explanation. 6d
Clare-Dragonfly @mcctrish Right?! 😂 Also, who else was shocked that Laurentini is her first name?! I definitely thought it was a last name. 6d
mcctrish @Clare-Dragonfly that‘s the mystery right there 🤣🤣🤣 6d
Clare-Dragonfly @mcctrish The real mystery of Udolpho: Who Are These Udolpho People Who Name Their Kid Laurentini? 6d
TheAromaofBooks @mcctrish - LITERALLY what I was thinking when I was reading this - this is like a synopsis of all the actually interesting parts of this story that we weren't allowed to know about for some reason 😂 5d
peanutnine @TheAromaofBooks I definitely think it would have been more effective if we had learned what Emily read/saw earlier on and then revealed what it all meant at the end. Explaining it away immediately after revealing the mystery made it so much less shocking as a reader 5d
TheAromaofBooks @peanutnine - I totally agree!! I think if we knew what Emily did - that there was a half-decayed body in a hidden room - EVERYTHING would have been way creepier than just “something is there“ - and then in the end we get the big reveal about it not being a real body. As it is it was just kind of - it's a body! PSYCH! The end. lol 5d

mcctrish Well that was action packed @Clare-Dragonfly they also don‘t read or finish thoughts or ever let us know what‘s going on! Emily is haunted by papers she burned and didn‘t read except for a few words which she won‘t recount to us 😡 7d
Bookwormjillk This book is almost over and I feel like we‘re still in the introduction. 7d
eeclayton @mcctrish I also really want to know what she saw behind that veil in the castle of Udolpho 😡 7d
mcctrish @eeclayton is this the mystery of udolpho? Unfinished thoughts? Things not described? Conversations not had? Things we missed cuz we fainted ? it‘s certainly not tears not shed #rivershavebeencried #lakeshavebeenfilled 7d
dabbe Your picture says EVERYTHING about this book that I simply could not finish. Absolute kudos to all of you who could! You are my inspiration! 💙❄️💙 7d
AllDebooks @mcctrish 😅🤣🤣 I actually feel cheated. This is supposed to be one of the most iconic, ground-breaking gothic novels and it's pure melodrama eeked out forrrrreeeevvvvvvver #teenagevoiceandeyeroll 👀🙄 Where all the ghosts and mysteries at? 7d

Clare-Dragonfly Emily persists in thinking the Count is an honest, nice guy who really cares about her well-being as he repeatedly shoves his obsessed buddy in her face 🙄 1w
See All 8 Comments
mcctrish @Clare-Dragonfly 🤣🤣🤣 1w
AllDebooks Oh, we are so close to the end. The book, sanity, who knows? 🥳 I'm struck by the difference in writing style between this and Frankenstein, considering there are just over 20 years between publications. Mary Shelley was still in her teens when she wrote it. 1w
eeclayton Not to defend the Count, but I have the impression that he's been friends with Du Pont for much longer than with Emily, so it kinda makes sense to me that he wants to promote his happiness. Which of course doesn't make him any less annoying from E's point of view. 1w
BarkingMadRead @eeclayton that‘s a very good point 1w
TheAromaofBooks @eeclayton - I also think the Count sees sweet, lonely Emily at a time when being a single woman was actually somewhat unsafe & knows that his young friend is an upstanding guy who loves her and would take good care of her (vs taking advantage of her and stealing all her money). Like it's annoying to E because she doesn't want to marry him, but lots of people married for convenience, so unless the Count forces the issue, I can't fault him too much 1w

I'm currently participating in the final #hashtagbrigade #buddyread of the year. 10ish chapters left, and I just don't care anymore. I've never read a book with more loose ends, dead ends, and 'we won't talk about that' plot devices in my life. Thank goodness for @BarkingMadRead keeping us sane and the humour flowing. Otherwise, I would have bailed around chapter 10!
FYI, I got bored and did a word count. 🙄😅

dabbe I managed to get through THE BROTHERS KARAMAZOV thanks to this group and @BarkingMadRead's hilarious posts and @Aimeesue's hysterical dioramas, but this one? I bailed at Book 2. And I had also tried to read it a few years ago. I just couldn't do it. Again. BarkingMadRead @TheAromaofBooks without Annette, we wouldn‘t know a damn thing 🤣 2w
Clare-Dragonfly There doesn‘t seem to be much acknowledgement that Annette‘s husband has disappeared! 2w
Clare-Dragonfly Linguistic note: I see that Annette has switched from calling Emily “mamselle” to “madam”! This matches up with something I noted in the book I just finished—in English, Mrs was for a long time just a title of respect for an adult woman of a certain class, even if she wasn‘t married. The Mrs versus Miss for marital status distinction wasn‘t solidified until the mid-19th century. Emily is probably Madam now that she‘s inherited. (edited) 2w

Bklover @mcctrish yes! When I think of all the weeping and fainting over V it makes me want to scream. You are right- she doesn‘t even really know him! 3w
mcctrish It‘s nice she had him to focus on while at Udolpho but cut him loose now 3w
Bookwormjillk At first I was kind of on V's side because yeah she just met this Count guy. But then he admitted to it all so bye V. And what is the story of the picture? 3w

Bookwormjillk @AllDebooks yes I actually can that‘s why I was worried 😂 4w
Clare-Dragonfly I‘m relieved that we made it back to this castle. I spent like 14 chapters wondering when Emily was going to figure out that Udolpho was the creepy castle she saw before. Then I realized it was in Italy so it must be a different castle, and I wondered why they spent so much time being aware of that creepy castle! I also realized that the convent Blanche lived in must be a different one. I think Radcliffe has too many settings! 🙄 4w

Bookwormjillk Okay so I‘m not the only one who had no clue who these people are? 4w
BarkingMadRead @mcctrish @Bookwormjillk I‘m low key pissed about this 🤣🤣 4w
mcctrish They don‘t cry as much 4w
Bookwormjillk @BarkingMadRead I mean I can‘t even keep it low key. I want to speak to a manager. 4w
AllDebooks @mcctrish 🤣🤣 4w
mcctrish @Bookwormjillk let‘s get them on speaker phone 4w
TheAromaofBooks Apparently someone just needs to be in a creepy castle so since Emily is out for now, gotta find someone else to chuck into one 😂 4w
Clare-Dragonfly Emily is going back to the convent but Blanche (?) just left the convent so… are they going to meet? Why didn‘t they meet when Emily was at the convent burying her dad? 4w
Bklover Ummmm…who the hell are these people?!?! 4w
julieclair @TheAromaofBooks There‘s a creepy castle around every corner in this book. Somebody has to live in them! So the obvious answer is to introduce more characters. 🤓🤣 4w

mcctrish Despite being long, and fainting at critical points where creepers are involved 🤦🏻‍♀️ #forfuckssakeemily this chapter has accomplished more than the entire book to day #praisebe also thank goodness ludacris checked under the saddle so E could buy a hat 4w

Clare-Dragonfly That‘s why I called him Ludo in the first place 😂😂😂 4w
Clare-Dragonfly And yeah, as soon as the guy wouldn‘t tell Ludo his name, I knew it wasn‘t going to be V. 4w
Bookwormjillk I was a bit shocked it wasn‘t V myself. But then again we still have many chapters to go. 4w
Bklover I wonder where V is? Maybe he‘s moved on! (I sure hope not after all this) 4w
peanutnine I had a feeling the creeper wasn't V cause he would have already admitted it to Emily, he was always really frank about his stalker tendencies lol 4w
mcctrish @Bklover he‘s still partying in Paris 4w

mcctrish @peanutnine like Emily knew he was a cheat and a liar and she stilled signed 🤦🏻‍♀️ why couldn‘t she give Ludacris at least 24 hrs AND Annette is going to get them killed 4w
eeclayton Seriously, Emily 🤦🤦🤦 4w
TheAromaofBooks I'm soooo confused about why she got sent away and then brought back when it's obvious Macaroni doesn't care about her safety at all?? Did he just think she might get killed before he got the paper signed?! 4w
AllDebooks I thought we were done with Annette 🫣😅 4w
BarkingMadRead @TheAromaofBooks I think it said at one point that if she died, he wouldn‘t get the property, it had to be signed over? 4w
Bookwormjillk If I was being held captive in a creepy castle I would hope my true love would do more than play music at night. 4w
julieclair I couldn‘t believe Emily signed the papers. Soooo disappointing and frustrating. 4w

ElizaMarie I'm behind but I'm gonna catch up tomorrow. Now I know where I should end up!!! 1mo
mcctrish @Ruthiella she is now exhausted by her tears so maybe we can catch a break ( I didn‘t even realize she was crying. Again. ) 1mo
Clare-Dragonfly Macaroni obviously isn‘t going to kill her, because he wouldn‘t inherit her estates (I presume her closest living relative would, and that‘s the mom‘s brother, whom it would be a lot harder to get the property from). But this seems like a lovely place so I‘m suspicious of the niceness. 1mo
Bklover To me this book feels so much like it was written by a man! All the fainting and crying and weak women. And I mean a man back in that time. (edited) 1mo
Bookwormjillk So weird. Glad she made a friend though. Random sea nymph poem inserted here. 1mo
julieclair I‘m glad I don‘t have to “analyze” this book for an English class. I don‘t know what I‘d do about that sea nymph song! 😂 Which, by the way, was sung in the audio version and was completely tuneless! But at least Emily has made a friend. 4w

Clare-Dragonfly How did she even almost sign without reading?! She‘d spent all that time thinking about how she wasn‘t going to do what Macaroni said! 1mo
mcctrish I mean she can read why does she not read? But as @peanutnine said she has learned one lesson in all this crying and fainting. 1mo

Bookwormjillk I started reading this chapter about 5 hours ago and just woke up from one of the best naps of my life. I agree with everyone else- Emily read the papers! 1mo

Hope I'm not too late to join this fabulous party! I hope to finish SOVEREIGN today because the discussion is tomorrow! I also hope to attempt to catch up to the #hashtagbrigade with UDOLPHO. If only the book were actually as interesting as the cover I found above. I'm gonna try.

Welcome back, @Andrew65. You have been missed. 🧡🤎💛

Clare-Dragonfly I was just thinking this couldn‘t possibly be set up by Macaroni because he doesn‘t need to be this subtle when he can just threaten her. And I was proven right! I‘m wondering if her aunt is really dead? Was that the body she saw? And if they thought Ludo was dead and he wasn‘t, could that be the case again? 1mo
BarkingMadRead @Clare-Dragonfly I wonder the same. It‘s dark. And she‘s … Emily… so it could totally be a mistake! 1mo
mcctrish It‘s dark and she‘s Emily 🤣🤣🤣 doesn‘t macaroni want the aunt dead so he can marry Emily and get the property? 1mo
mcctrish @Clare-Dragonfly I‘m pretty sure no one in this story has first aid and it shows 1mo
ElizaMarie I am getting super confused with where we are- I get confused when the chapters aren't labeled like just 1, 2, 3.... but when they do Vol and then Ch and then blah! the Crying!!! Where are we!? I thought I was reading #AChapterADay but now I am confused -- anyone have a table? 1mo

Bookwormjillk Long line to poison that dude. Also did I miss why she‘s so determined to find Auntie? Auntie doesn‘t like her except for that one sort of compliment that one time. 1mo
BarkingMadRead @Bookwormjillk I have no idea, if I were Emily, I‘d be trying to escape. Forget auntie. 1mo
AllDebooks Radcliffe is overly fond of the word 'wither'. There has been an awful lot of withering lately 1mo
TheAromaofBooks I honestly kind of admired Emily in this chapter - she's completely terrified but still determined to find her aunt and make sure she's okay. And she seems to be fainting more than crying; haven't decided whether or not that's an improvement 😂 1mo
BarkingMadRead @TheAromaofBooks I know, like what‘s worse? The fainting or the crying? At least the fainting takes less time 🤷🏻‍♀️ 1mo

dabbe @TheAromaofBooks OMG ... so true!!!! 😂😂😂 1mo
mcctrish I realized at the start of my reading today we are only 43% through this nonsense and I could cry. And then we get a short chapter which I should be thrilled about, except we‘ve been reading for 100 years and nothing but crying has happened except V, after moping around in Emily‘s absence has moved to Paris to become a club kid 🤯 #wherethefuckisthisgoing (edited) 1mo
BarkingMadRead @mcctrish 🤣🤣🤣 this is scarily accurate 1mo
Clare-Dragonfly I don‘t like the short chapters! I am updating my reading percentage daily in Storygraph and when the percentage stays the same Storygraph thinks I haven‘t read any of this book 🤣 1mo
Clare-Dragonfly So V hung around until his regiment couldn‘t do without him anymore. And since they needed him so badly he… made social connections and started a gambling habit? 🤨 1mo
BarkingMadRead @Clare-Dragonfly boys are dumb and story graph needs to understand that 🤷🏻‍♀️ 1mo

Clare-Dragonfly @mcctrish micro-aggression is a good way to read this book 🤣 It isn‘t Storygraph‘s fault, I would be able to use page numbers if I were reading a physical book, but also there‘s *no way* I would read this in hard copy! 1mo

#Two4Tuesday is my fav question, thanks @TheSpineView

1/ I tend to plan ahead what I read, one of my favourite things is lining up future reads.

2/ I'm going to go for the #currentread for #hashtagbrigade, this one didn't go to plan, it took me 5 months to read and I was sure when I finished I'd think never again but no, it's left an impression and I would definitely read again, next time I'm hoping it doesn't take this long.

TheSpineView So glad you enjoy #Two4Tuesday Thanks for playing along! 😘 1mo
