pickAmazing this is a debut novel! It feels like a bit of a mashup between a traditional American Western & an organized crime novel, but set in contemporary rural NW England. As odd as it sounds, it works. Gritty and sometimes gruesome, yet there is also the natural beauty of the fells.

Cathythoughts Great review! I loved it. I loved the nature descriptions , the lifestyle of working with the sheep, the hardness and solitary nature of it. The passion felt for it. And what about Rusty in the end ! I cried. It‘s an image that has stayed with me. I thought it a powerful book. One I‘ll remember. Strong stuff. 3w
Tamra @Cathythoughts oh yes, such distinctive voices that the novel highly memorable - agreed! I wasn‘t sure exactly how to interpret the end, it was so unexpected! Does it symbolize his death, death of a dream, beginnings, or hope? Does it represent being lost to or an inextricable bond to the land? It seems to be a sacrifice. It was so sad. I want a physical copy for my shelves. 3w

Cathythoughts I‘m not sure what it means, all you say is true I think. Rusty was part of him and I wasn‘t expecting to ever see him again. I got a huge shock ! That image broke my heart. 3w
Cathythoughts Im so glad you liked it and got it too. My husband read it too and while he really enjoyed it , he didn‘t have the same emotional experience I did. But he agreed it was special. 3w
