Icebreaker | A.L. Graziadei
8 posts | 8 read | 3 to read
A. L. Graziadei's Icebreaker is a YA debut about two hockey players fighting to be the best—and the romance that catches them by surprise along the way.
Seventeen-year-old Mickey James III is a college freshman, a brother to five sisters, and a hockey legacy. With a father and a grandfather who have gone down in NHL history, Mickey is almost guaranteed the league's top draft spot.
The only person standing in his way is Jaysen Caulfield, a contender for the #1 spot and Mickey's infuriating (and infuriatingly attractive) teammate. When rivalry turns to something more, Mickey will have to decide what he really wants, and what he's willing to risk for it.
This is a story about falling in love, finding your team (on and off the ice), and choosing your own path.

pros: enemies to lovers/rivalry, hockey, queer, diversity, men showing emotion and platonic affection, therapy, mental health, communication, growth, family pressure, supportive sisters
cons: rushed ending, open ending (boooo!!), undefined motivations for character change/growth
Overall, really enjoyed it!! Read it super quick in one sitting, would recommend

I loved this. It was a very raw portrayal of mental health struggles, parental expectation, figuring out your sexuality and place in the world.

The ending was a little rushed especially when the rest of the book was quite slow paced. I didn't mind that though.

There was so much I liked about this book. It's diversity. Mickey's relationships with his older sisters. Discussion of mental health and parents expectations. But to use my limited Hocky knowledge, author missed the final goal with 5 seconds on the clock.

Ending was so rushed. I was listening to audiobook, with 30 min left, and wondering how it was going to wrap up. Answer was they didn't! Open Ending. Nothing was resolved! ⬇️

Crinoline_Laphroaig I hate Open Endings. Felt like the author didn't know how to solve characters problems so they just gave up. Only way it works for me is if there is a Sequel.( One other thing bothered me but it's Spoiler so I'll put it in next comment.) 2y
Crinoline_Laphroaig There‘s no character motivation for why Mickey's dad suddenly becomes a caring parent after years of neglect. 2y

Once I started I couldn't put the book away. The depiction of struggles with depression was very good. I wish I could read a book like that as a teen. It so important to have stories that emphasise how necessary it is to talk with other people and ask for help. The only example I remember from my teenage years were characters who suffered in silence and were alone with their struggles (e.g. Holden Caulfield). So glad it is different now

Second book for #JumpStart2023 down! This book was so cute but with some of the best depiction of depression/weight of having to live up to a family name I‘ve ever seen. Honestly gave me a lot of Check, Please vibes! Also covers “a borrowed book” prompt for the #NoBuyChallenge2023 and FOUR prompts for #ReadySetRead2023 (a debut, sports romance, LGBTQ+, author‘s name has initials)

PuddleJumper Brilliant! I was going to read this over Christmas but never got around to it. Going to bump it up my TBR because it sounds good 2y
Clwojick Wow awesome job! A love when a book is perfect for challenge/prompt stacking! 💫✨🙌🏻💖 2y

I know book comparisons aren't always fair to make, but this one can't be avoided: if you love hockey robot Jack Zimmerman, you will love hockey robot Mickey James III. They are absolutely unique characters who approach the pressures of being a hockey legacy while trying to handle mental illness in different ways. But they are also both mentally ill hockey legacy bisexual disasters and I love them both so much for it.

Wow! Well, I did not intend to read this entire thing in a day, but once I got started I just had to keep going! Now it‘s 2:00 am, but it was totally worth it.
