The New Trail of Tears
The New Trail of Tears: How Washington Is Destroying American Indians | Naomi Riley
4 posts | 1 read | 4 to read
If you want to know why American Indians have the highest rates of poverty of any racial group, why suicide is the leading cause of death among Indian men, why native women are two and a half times more likely to be raped than the national average and why gang violence affects American Indian youth more than any other group, do not look to history. There is no doubt that white settlers devastated Indian communities in the 19th, and early 20th centuries. But it is our policies todaydenying Indians ownership of their land, refusing them access to the free market and failing to provide the police and legal protections due to them as American citizensthat have turned reservations into small third-world countries in the middle of the richest and freest nation on earth. The tragedy of our Indian policies demands reexamination immediatelynot only because they make the lives of millions of American citizens harder and more dangerousbut also because they represent a microcosm of everything that has gone wrong with modern liberalism. They are the result of decades of politicians and bureaucrats showering a victimized people with money and cultural sensitivity instead of what they truly needthe education, the legal protections and the autonomy to improve their own situation. If we are really ready to have a conversation about American Indians, it is time to stop bickering about the names of football teams and institute real reforms that will bring to an end this ongoing national shame.

What started out as an interesting look at government policies that prevent Native Americans from using land as collateral, thereby preventing them from acquiring loans to start up businesses, etc, soon digressed into a diatribe on tribal corruption and ineptitude. The author believes Native Americans should be using CPS, Catholic schools, and the regular justice system all of which is better. Because it has worked so well for them in the past

Nebklvr @Tamra Longer review on goodreads—step by step with some articles from npr and newsweek linked 6y
Nebklvr @Owlizabeth I would be happy to hear your thoughts on it. It was recommended to me. I found the tone very condescending and had already tuned out by the time we got to Washington Redskins, Columbus Day, and political correctness blurbs 6y
Owlizabeth I haven‘t read it, I was saying oh no to the idea of Catholic schools after the terrible history of “white” education for indigenous peoples. That book sounds infuriating. 6y
Nebklvr @Owlizabeth The author acknowledged the abuse but seemed to think everyone should just get over it, forgive and forget. The schools are failing the kids. I agree something needs to be done. Some of the Catholic schools and other schools are doing very well. If I had been abused at one during my childhood, no way in hell would I send my kids. But then this ol girl just doesn‘t forgive and forget well 6y
Nebklvr @Owlizabeth On the bright side, my face has almost returned to its normal pasty color from the red hot lava flow that it was... 6y
Owlizabeth Hahahaha! Good on you for finishing, I‘d probably have bailed. 6y
Nebklvr @Owlizabeth Of it had been any longer than 186 pages.... 6y

Soooooo....this book is making me quite angry. I am not trusting the motives of the author currently. Subtlety is not one of her virtues. Plan to finish tomorrow and unless things change, a temper tantrum may be thrown.

Well....this is a dose of depressing...

Tamra It‘s shameful how society ignores the issues facing NA communities. 6y
Nebklvr @Tamra This is not at all what I was expecting but it is interesting. I would like to read more about the subject. Any recs? 6y
Tamra @Nebklvr good question that I don‘t have an answer to. Try this bookstore‘s online shop - it specializes in NA authors & artists. https://birchbarkbooks.com/native-studies 6y

Living near a reservation, I've seen the destruction of families due to poverty, drugs, alcoholism, and violence. Is the government at fault for the plight of the American Indians? Some excellent talking points in this book!
