Brighter Than Scale, Swifter Than Flame
Brighter Than Scale, Swifter Than Flame | Neon Yang
5 posts | 4 read | 6 to read
With an armored, oath-bound hero reminiscent of The Mandalorian and the Asian-inspired epic fantasy of She Who Became the Sun, Neon Yang's Brighter than Scale, Swifter than Flame is a stunning queer novella about a dragon hunter finding home with a dragon queen. Few know the true identity of the masked guildknight of Mithrandon. She barely remembers herself. The masked guildknight--Yeva--was thirteen when she killed her first dragon. With her gift revealed, she was shipped away to the imperial capital to train in the rare art of dragon-slaying. Now a legendary dragon hunter, she has never truly felt at home--nor removed her armor in public--since that fateful day all those years ago. Yeva must now go to Quanbao, a fiercely independent and reclusive kingdom. It is rumored that there, dragons are not feared as is right and proper, but instead loved and worshipped. It is rumored that there, they harbor a dragon behind their borders. While Yeva searches for the dreaded beast, she is welcomed into the palace by Quanbao's monarch, Lady Sookhee. Though wary of each other, Yeva is shocked to find herself slowly opening up to the beautiful, mysterious queen. As they grow closer, Yeva longs to let Lady Sookhee see the person behind the armor, but she knows she must fulfill her purpose and slay the dragon. Ultimately, she must decide who--or what--she is willing to betray: her own heart, or the sacred duty that she has called home for so long.

4.5/5

As a child, Yeva put on the armor of a dragon-slayer and did her best to forget what life was like before. But when she is sent to Quanbao, she is forced to face the part of herself she has tried to hide and the fact that she may not know all there is to know about dragons.

This was an incredible novella that packed in so much mythology and world-building
into a beautiful story about suppressing self for misplaced loyalty and duty.

willaful I was hoping to read this for #QueerBC but I waited fruitlessly for my copy, lol. 2w

For a long time this was a So-So for me. I struggled with the world and the language (and a reading slump, tbh). But the more the story progressed, the more I got drawn into it. Since it's a novella, it all goes rather fast and I would've loved a little more time for the characters to get closer. But I loved how it all came together in the end.

After Yeva kills her 1st dragon, she is sent to the capital of the Empire to train as a guildknight. Eventually, the Emperor commands her to a nearby country w/ rumors of dragons. But the rumors, & the country itself, are not what they seem.

Yang‘s world building always captivates me. & the queer normative cultures are amazing. This is a lovely, quick tale of finding where one belongs, discovering what duty really means, & finding love.🌕🌕🌕🌕🌗

Received to review via Netgalley! I predicted the plot fairly quickly, but I still think it's a well written story; I know my sister is going to love it, though it'll have to wait for Christmas since it isn't going to be out in time for her birthday. Dragons and lesbians, oh my! And a story of belonging and masks and finding home in the end.
