This book has cleared up my misunderstanding of Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland. Because my adoration of Nicola Coughlan led me to the Derry Girls, I wanted to learn more about the time period. There is so much division and hate all because Queen Elizabeth I planted British in this area. Will there truly ever be trust or peace? I will find another book for #FoodandLit @Texreader @Catsandbooks
TheBookHippie Ireland is hugely antisemitic- which I have a hard time with, as is Nicola. IMO. My girlfriend who grew up in Ireland says it‘s always been so where she lived, but also the immense hatred of the royal family growing up was intense. It‘s a lot of hatred in such a beautiful place. She readily admits being poor made it worse and was happy to get to the states in her late 20s almost 50 years ago now. 23h
Texreader Last summer my daughter took a college class on the Troubles while traveling its important sites both north and south. Husband and I got to spend some time in Dublin where we dropped her off. (edited) 23h

Butterfinger @TheBookHippie I wondered about that red button she wore during the press tour of Bridgerton. I googled it and became so mad. I told a friend that I couldn't believe someone from Ireland could be against Israel. I thought the situations similar; that an Irish person could sympathize. I just tried to make sense of it by thinking she didn't want innocent children being killed. That makes so much sense. Thank you for telling me. 21h
TheBookHippie @Butterfinger I don‘t want innocent children to die. She doesn‘t want me to exist. 😵💫 That‘s the difference. 21h
Butterfinger @TheBookHippie you misunderstand. I misunderstood the purpose of the red button. I didn't want to believe that she was anti-Semitic till you confirmed it. I will never admire someone like that. 17h
Butterfinger @TheBookHippie I will always be pro-Israel. Once a week, I check on the status of the hostages. I am so sorry I hurt your feelings. I had never heard about Ireland's stance, and I didn't want to believe that Nicola supported Hamas. I should have trusted my first instinct of anger toward her last July. PLEASE, continue to teach me. 17h
Cuilin As someone who was born and raised in Ireland this conversation saddens me. I‘ve never encountered antisemitism there, none. Or much hatred of the Royals either. (The Queen was celebrated during her visit 2011) I‘m not sure where your friend was from in Ireland @TheBookHippie but my experience is vastly different. I‘m very happy you exist 🩷 (I‘m sickened by Trumps vision for Gaza though. Is that wrong?😑) 13h
TheBookHippie @Cuilin OMG the Trump video 😫😵💫 so horrific. Makes me sick. I should remember where she‘s from 🤦🏻♀️ but I cannot. I‘ll ask her -she before becoming terminal did go visit about every two years to see her sister. I have lovely tiny cookbooks from her visits. 12h
TheBookHippie @Cuilin Ireland was the last to allow Isreal to have an embassy- and the first to shut one down - which is recent. Which I realize is the government not its people. 12h
TheBookHippie A few articles in a quick search that say what my friend has told me https://simple.wikipedia.org/wiki/Antisemitism_in_Ireland and https://www.thejc.com/opinion/is-ireland-the-most-antisemitic-country-in-the-wes... & https://www.jewishpress.com/indepth/opinions/antisemitism-in-ireland-an-exclusiv... 11h
TheBookHippie @Butterfinger I have the same disappointment with so many actors and singers and people on Litsy. It‘s one thing to be misinformed it‘s another to spew hatred and double down like Nicola has- I was stunned- I love some of her shows. 11h
TheBookHippie @Cuilin my friend is having a sleep day but I know she left in 1970-1 after the troubles (?) and was glad she was gone when Bloody Sunday happened. I do know she‘s from the south, it‘s weird name- they were very very poor and most ppl left of her genealogy during the potato famine . I looked at a map but nothing hits me. 2h
