Street Without a Name
Street Without a Name: Childhood and Other Misadventures in Bulgaria | Kapka Kassabova
3 posts | 4 read | 5 to read
Kassabova was born in Sofia, Bulgaria and grew up under the drab, muddy, grey mantle of one of communisms most mindlessly authoritarian regimes. Escaping with her family as soon as possible after the collapse of the Berlin Wall, she lived in Britain, New Zealand, and Argentina, and several other places. But when Bulgaria was formally inducted to the European Union she decided it was time to return to the home she had spent most of her life trying to escape. What she found was a country languishing under the strain of transition. This two-part memoir of Kapkas childhood and return explains life on the other side of the Iron Curtain.

#BookSpinBingo Blackout just at the last minute. 😀 @TheAromaofBooks

This also marks off another for #ReadingEurope2020. @Librarybelle @BarbaraBB

The author does a great job with this memoir. She talks about her life in Bulgaria and the impacts it had on her, both as a child and later as an adult. Having grown up in America, I can't imagine some of the difficult situations she faced. It was educational for me in a lot of ways.

This was such a raw memoir by Kapka Kassabova. I thoroughly enjoyed it and found it a really interesting read. Socialism with a human face was so difficult for many and it amazes me how people got through it.

3 books finished today, great day for reading 😊

squirrelbrain Sounds great, although I read this one by the same author and found it hard to get into. I‘ll stack this one anyway as my North Macedonia book is a huuuge chunkster! 4y
suzie.reads @squirrelbrain it is mainly in Bulgaria but her grandfather is from Macedonia and she visits alot and no other book for North Macedonia intrigued me enough lol 4y
