4 posts | 1 read | 1 to read
The enhanced The Lyrics of Leonard Cohen is a four decade-spanning collection, containing the lyrics of Suzanne, Hallelujah, So Long, Marianne, Everybody Knows, Famous Blue Raincoat and many more, including songs written but never recorded by Cohen himself. Blackly comic, tender, and polished until they shone like diamonds, Cohens lyrics were unmistakable. This Omnibus Enhanced edition includes curated Spotify playlists for each song in this collection, showcasing both the recorded works of Leonard Cohen and a selection of the many interpretations and reimaginings of his songs. Additionally, alongside an exclusive tribute to the man, there is also an interactive timeline of his life, complete with rare videos and images of life performances, book extracts and more. Cohen was an accomplished novelist and poet before releasing his first album, Songs of Leonard Cohen. His music documented the tender yearnings and salved the heartbreaks of romantics around the world for six decades. The Lyrics of Leonard Cohen is an examination of the literary influence of the master wordsmith and a dazzling display of the work of one of our most passionate musical artists. Rediscover his genius in with this celebratory volume.

I heard of a saint who had loved you
So I studied all night in his school
He taught that the duty of lovers is to tarnish the golden rule
And just when I was sure that his teachings were pure
He drowned himself in the pool
His body is gone, but back here on the lawn
His spirit continues to drool

One of us cannot be wrong

Leonard Cohen

And Jesus was a sailor when he walked upon the water
And he spent a long time watching from his lonely wooden tower
And when he knew for certain only drowning men could see him
He said all men will be sailors then until the sea shall free them
But he himself was broken, long before the sky would open
Forsaken, almost human, he sank beneath your wisdom like a stone

“And draw us near
And bind us tight
All your children here
In their rags of light
In our rags of light
All dressed to kill
And end this night
If it be your will“
Remembering Leonard Cohen on his birthday.

Pickpick

Lyrically adept and musically masterful. Everybody talks about the words but I reckon Bob Dylan nailed it: with Leonard it was always about the melodies. In fact, I‘ll confess: sometimes the lyrics make me cringe. ‘Her nipples rose like bread‘ - I mean, c‘mon....But those tunes: wonderful from beginning to end. Beyond the end, in fact, as this posthumous release makes clear. The words ain‘t bad either.

Clare-Dragonfly Oh dear, that line you quoted… bread takes hours to rise 😆 5y
Suet624 I hadn‘t thought of it, but you and Dylan are absolutely right. That‘s what I‘ve always loved about him too, the melody. 5y
Mistermandolin @Clare-Dragonfly I wondered if that was the point and Leonard was simply being too smart for us. ‘Her nipples rose like bread‘ = it took me an eternity to get her aroused. Kind of self-deprecatingly funny. But then I went back to the whole lyric and it‘s: ‘I touched her sleeping breasts/They opened to me urgently/Like lilies from the dead/ Behind a fine embroidery/Her nipples rose like bread.‘ Whaddaya reckon? Still not doing it for me. 5y
Clare-Dragonfly Well, now it sounds rapey and gross 🤢 5y
